Michael Mancienne, captain for the first time, was magnificent in central defence. Forward Scott Sinclair had twice broken through and failed to finish when he fastened on to James Simmonds' pass which dissected the right-back and centre-back and scored his 19th goal of the season in reserve and youth team games. West Ham's equaliser came five minutes later when a cross-shot evaded Ma Kalambay. Chelsea, however, had more first-half chances for Jimmy Smith and Phil Younghusband. In the second-half, immediately on replacing injured Simmonds, Ricardo Fernandes scored his first reserve team goal with a 20 yards smash. But West Ham again equalised, ten minutes from time, when Grant was caught in possession having controlled a long ball, and the home side had an easy finish. Jimmy Smith hit the woodwork twice, so Chelsea were unlucky, and Ma Kalambay had little to do beyond the goals. Manager Mick McGiven said: “It was a good end of season game. We had two young teams trying to do the right things on a shocking pitch.
