Sheva scoring a long way from home Tuesday, Aug 15, 2006 http://www.chelseafc.com/article.asp?hlid=409878&m=8&y=2006 Andriy Shevchenko’s first goal in a Chelsea shirt could be viewed as the player formally introducing himself to British football. It’s been a long journey both geographically and in a sporting sense for the boy from Ukraine once denied a college place due to his sub-standard football. It will take many more goals yet before Chelsea’s record signing is judged an undoubted success but the ‘done this a few times before’ manner in which he stroked in his Cardiff goal was a great way to start. Recalling Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink opening his Chelsea account in a Charity Shield game and never looking back, there is something very reassuring about a striker scoring in his first major game. Andriy himself was most definitely pleased. “I am relieved,” he said a day after the event. “I am sorry that the goal was not enough to make the team win. It was my first important match with the team, I wanted to win, but I am glad I scored one goal and opened my season on a high note. “Now I am really looking forward to my first experience of playing in the English Premiership. I want to understand how it is going to work. Playing on Sunday I was struck by the public, the respect that they showed for all players and the atmosphere in the stadium was great. “Compared to Italy and Ukraine, the crowd is a different mentality. I have always liked the respect shown by the crowds here to athletes and football players.” After seven years playing in the San Siro for Milan, Andriy is well accustomed to the big stage and the bright spotlight. But 13 years ago he must have feared he would never experience anything close to the weekend’s game against Liverpool. An athletic child, the young Andriy had tried his hand at many sports — ice hockey, basketball, boxing - even wrestling although a form rather different from the American WWF incarnation! But he settled on the world’s most popular game. Football in the end won my heart. I started when I was nine in a junior team for Dynamo Kiev — but also football chose me because it gave me the right directions, thinking about my future and working hard.” His father turned down the opportunity for an improved work opportunity so his son could remain training with his junior side, a sacrifice for which Andriy remains eternally grateful. However several years later when the 16 year-old hopeful finished his conventional schooling but had not been picked up by a professional club, he opted for another avenue that would allow him to pursue his ambition for a football career. He applied to continue playing as part of a university course. He failed the entrance exam on just one discipline — football ability! XD It is unknown the current employment status of the person who judged the 2004 European Footballer of the Year not up to the college game. But things moved fast soon after. “Maybe that year I wasn’t good enough,” smiles Andriy. “Of course I didn’ t like failing but I was confident in myself and only two months later I was picked in the second team for Dynamo Kiev. Six months later I was already playing in the first team and I had this great chance to change my destiny.” Just three years after the failure he was playing for the national side. The initial rejection by the university must have been traumatic, but it was nothing compared with what the whole population of the area had suffered some years earlier. Andriy was just nine when the Chernobyl nuclear reactor in the Ukraine suffered a catastrophic accident, sending a radioactive cloud over a huge part of Europe. Contrary to what is sometimes reported, his whole family was not evacuated from its home. “My village was about 130 km from Chernobyl and it was a big disaster, not only for my country but for the entire world. My family was not relocated because it was only the immediate vicinity of the power plant that had to move. “For us we were living near Kiev and we didn’t have to move. It was only after I had started school for summer that me and some other kids were taken somewhere away from the centre of Kiev. We were taken to a town on the sea where we spent three months. Then we came back and life went on as usual for us. "This disaster not only changed my outlook on life but also the world’s because it is not just what happened on that particular day, it has also had a big impact over the years. “There are people still feeling the effects of the disaster. Our family was lucky compared with others because so far we haven’t had any problems. I think at that age I couldn’t understand what was going on but now that I am older I can see the facts, the aftermath. 但現在我能了解事實以及後果/ “Other families, especially children, they are still suffering a generation later with problems at birth and several types of illnesses.” The Andriy Shevchenko Foundation, a charitable foundation set up by the player helps child victims of the disaster and orphans back in Ukraine. Andriy’s family home may have remained in the Kiev region back in 1996 but 20 years on he finds himself settling into a new city 1300 miles away. He has barely had chance to scratch the surface of the London metropolis but his verdict so far? “Fantastic! London is a great town. What has struck me the most is the number of parks and the diversity of people. Pity about the weather!”
