Shevchenko: a blip or the yips? By Tony Cascarino
It's a beautiful afternoon on the golf course. Heading toward the seventh
hole, you make your best tee shot of the day. Your second shot blazes
straight down the fairway, and your iron shot lands three feet from the
cup. Just one smooth tap of the putter and you'll card a birdie.
You feel confident as you address the ball. But just as your putter makes
contact with it, a mild spasm interrupts your calculated stroke — and
your ball rolls past the cup.
You've just experienced the yips.
EVERYONE knows about the yips. They are when athletes are so affected by
nerves that they cannot perform a basic action. Like when one of the best
strikers in the world goes six games without scoring and does not look
like a goal threat. The simple header that misses the target, the
straightforward pass that is miscontrolled.
They are moments when you ask: why can't such a great player do this, it's
so easy? In football we call it a lack of confidence. But it is really the
yips. Mind affects body, technique fails, little things go wrong and make
a big difference.
Greg Norman, Eric Bristow, Sergio Garcia, they've all suffered from the
yips. Should Andriy Shevchenko be added to the list? Whether you are the
most useless amateur or a top professional, the yips can get you.
In golf, darts or snooker you have time to think, but football is a game
of constant action during which you make instant, instinctive decisions.
Yet for me, footballers are as vulnerable to the yips as anyone —
particularly strikers. And I should know.
Once, I confided in Andy Townsend that there was a particular scenario I
dreaded. A player goes down the left and pulls the ball back across goal.
I meet it with my weaker right foot from close range and shank it wide.
Then, in a game, it happened just like that. Andy looked at me and laughed.
It was his cross. I didn't see the funny side.
I was like the golfer who cannot hole five-foot putts, or Patsy Fagan, the
snooker player who couldn't use a rest. Yet in other aspects of my game,
such as heading, I was confident. But negativity was eating away at me.
The self-doubt affected me during games. I realised that my mental
preparation was flawed but I didn't want to admit to myself that I had a
problem.
So, like Shevchenko does, I worked my socks off, made sure that no one
could accuse me of hiding and tried to transform my fortunes with effort.
If only it was so simple.
At Aston Villa in 1990, Graham Taylor was my manager for only six weeks
before he left for the England job. Somehow he saw what I wouldn't admit
— that beneath my bubbly exterior I was troubled. He told me to see a
sports psychologist who helped me to think positively.
I watched Shevchenko at the training ground last week. Free kick after
free kick went over the bar. As his shots went high, his head went down.
You can be sure that when Shevchenko does find the net again all the
Chelsea boys will mob him. The squad have a close bond and, talking to
them last week, the squad are full of praise for his teamwork and
personality.
But a striker's worth is measured in goals, especially one as prolific as
Shevchenko. I wonder what the effect of the 2005 Champions League final
has been. His penalty in the shoot-out was one of the worst you will ever
see. What's more, the match wouldn't have gone to spot-kicks if he had
scored that easy chance near the end. That trauma stays with you.
But I got out of my indifferent spell and there is no doubt that
Shevchenko will, too. It's like Jose Mourinho, his manager, said: Chelsea
are winning without Shevchenko's goals. How good will they be when he is
on peak form? The thought is enough to give Chelsea's title rivals the
yips.
2006-07 (Chelsea): 8 apps, 1 goal
2005-06 (AC Milan): 40 apps, 28 goals
2004-05 (AC Milan): 39 apps, 23 goals
2003-04 (AC Milan): 41 apps, 28 goals
2002-03 (AC Milan): 35 apps, 9 goals
2001-02 (AC Milan): 35 apps, 17 goals
2000-01 (AC Milan): 48 apps, 33 goals
1999-00 (AC Milan): 38 apps, 25 goals
1998-99 (Dynamo Kiev): 40 apps, 28 goals
1997-98 (Dynamo Kiev): 33 apps, 25 goals
