Referee is relieved of duties as Cech dispute rumbles on http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,277-2411017,00.html By Russell Kempson CONSPIRACY theorists have been having a field day with the fallout from the Reading-Chelsea match on Saturday continuing unabated this week. Further fuel was poured on the fire yesterday when it was revealed that Mike Riley, the referee at the Madejski Stadium, has been relieved of his game in the Barclays Premiership on Sunday. Riley antagonised JosMourinho, the Chelsea manager, by apparently requesting that Cech, the injured Chelsea goalkeeper, be removed from the pitch. He was also criticised by the Portuguese for not sending off Stephen Hunt, the Reading midfield player, whose right knee had collided with Cech旧 head as they went for the ball. Cech underwent surgery for a depressed fracture of the skull at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford and although he is recovering well, he is unlikely to play until the new year. Riley denied Mourinho旧 charge, saying that he had acted according to the correct protocol for players who had suffered a head injury. Riley was scheduled to take charge of the North-East derby between Middlesbrough and Newcastle United at the Riverside Stadium on Sunday, but the FA Premier League has replaced him with Martin Atkinson. An 贈 dministrative error鐠has been blamed, with Riley having previously booked the weekend off for a family holiday. While it is rare for such mistakes to be made in refereeing appointments, it is believed that the match assessors at the Madejski were 滞appy鐠with Riley旧 display, during which he had to deal with another head injury, to Carlo Cudicini, Cech旧 replacement. He also sent off John Obi Mikel, the Chelsea midfield player, and Andre Bikey, of Reading. Cudicini, who fell awkwardly after a robust challenge from Ibrahima Sonko, the Reading defender, was discharged from the Royal Berkshire hospital and resumed light training yesterday.
