DECO RATED
Posted on: Sat 24 Jan 2009
Deco, who could make his FA Cup debut against Ipswich today, will hit his
best form again this season.
That's according to assistant first team coach Ray Wilkins who argues that
the cumulative effect of minor injuries on the player cannot be ignored
when judging his first Chelsea campaign.
Deco is available again having not played since the defeat at Old Trafford
a fortnight ago due to a calf problem.
'When Deco first arrived, everything written about him was quite
complimentary,' begins Wilkins.
'But everybody has their little dip and we always give foreign players a
year do we not? But I don't think we need to give Deco too long, he is an
exceptional player but he has had a lot of slight niggles.
'Hopefully now he has had a little time off he will come back and show
what he is all about. Deco will be in the squad today.'
The summer signing played the first five games of the season, scoring
twice and winning the Barclays Player of the Month award for August, but
was forced out of the home visit by Man United in September with a hip
problem in the warm-up.
A month passed before Deco returned, his longest period of absence.
Wilkins, a first-class midfielder in his day, admits he needed a six-month
period to find form after moving from Stamford Bridge to Man United. And
that was with minimal change in football culture.
'What top players do is play with injury because they want to be a part of
the side. You sacrifice yourself,' the coach explains.
'That goes against you and the injury becomes worse, but pride wants you
out on the pitch and Deco is the same as that. That's what big players are
all about, that's the drive all these guys have.
'When you're playing with injuries you're not going to reach your best
levels but give him credit for getting out there. The supporters sometimes
won't know that people are carrying something, but they do it because they
want to perform for the club.
'Deco will reach the level of performance that everyone saw at the start.'
While football is full of players who flourished after a not-so-promising
acclimatisation period having moved countries or even continents, Wilkins
does not believe a manager making a similar move needs to be cut quite so
much slack.
'But I think we should give them some time because our football is so
totally different to anything they would have come across,' he reckons.
'The initial period is the language barrier but when that is cleared up,
it is just coming to terms with who we are playing and the level we are
playing against. For instance Felipe knows the Championship because of
Burnley and will be more aware Ipswich could pose us a lot of problems.
'In other parts of the world you can say we will win a particular game. In
England you can't. You have to earn the right and every team gives you a
problem. You have to prepare in the best possible fashion, go out and win
the game.'
