YOUTH REPORT: IPSWICH 0 CHELSEA 3
Posted on: Sat 21 Feb 2009
Chelsea's youth team made it an impressive weekend all round with a
comfortable 3-0 win at Ipswich on Saturday morning.
Two early goals from schoolboys Aziz Deen Conteh and Rohan Ince put the
Blues into a half-time lead before Marko Mitrovic bundled a third after
the hosts had had a man sent off.
In the absence of Dermot Drummy, who is currently working with the
reserves, the team was coached by Mark Beeney, and he was impressed with
his side's second half performance.
'We scored two against the run of play when they made a point of running
themselves into the ground, getting close to us and stopping us from
playing, and we were fortunate to go in two up, but I'll take that for a
first game in charge,' he said.
'From half-time onwards the boys got the ball down and kept it a lot
better, moving it a lot quicker which made it harder for Ipswich to get
close to us. The player getting sent off and scoring the third goal
finished the game off and from there we completely took control of the
game.'
Chelsea goalkeeper, Aldi Haxhia, was forced into an early save from quick-
footed Ipswich forward Ronan Murray inside the first five minutes, before
Nikki Ahamed's deep cross was chested down and despatched emphatically
into the bottom corner by Conteh to open the scoring.
Two minutes later the lead was doubled by Ince. He had broken clear from a
midfield position to see his shot deflected wide for a corner, which was
swung in by the energetic Jordan Tabor, goalscorer of two free-kicks last
weekend.
The cross evaded everybody before reaching Ince at the far post, who did
well to direct a half-volley into the far corner.
Ipswich were rocked after making the better of the opening exchanges, but
fought back as Haxhia again denied Murray, whose loose touch had allowed
the Chelsea man the opportunity to dive low at the forward's feet.
Five minutes later Haxhia dived full length to his left to prevent Connor
Wickham from pulling a goal back, his spectacular drive was well held.
In the second half, Chelsea's extra quality began to show as first Josh
McEachran and then captain Danny Philliskirk were close to extending the
lead.
Just after the hour those two combined after a Tabor throw, but
Philliskirk blazed over. Within a minute the game looked safe anyway, as
Ipswich winger Reggie Lambe was given a straight red card for a
retaliatory kick after being fouled by Conteh.
On 64 minutes, Mitrovic delivered the killer blow. Philliskirk, a constant
threat from midfield, looped a header towards goal which rebounded along
the goal line off both posts, before the Swede managed to poke the ball
over the line. The Oldham-born Philliskirk was still trying to claim the
goal as his own after the final whistle, but it looked to have been the
number nine who had made the decisive touch.
As the clock ticked away, both Ipswich forwards again had chances but
neither could convert, ensuring a first Chelsea clean sheet since the
beginning of November.
