RESERVE REPORT: CHELSEA 3 FULHAM 3
Posted on: Mon 09 Nov 2009
Three splendid goals by a much-changed side saw Chelsea come from behind
three times in Monday night's derby.
In contrast to the first team the day before, it was the attacks very much
on top of the defences in a lively encounter, especially in the closing
stages. Chelsea hit the woodwork three times in addition to the three goals.
Daniel Sturridge was among the home team's scorers with Billy Knott
(pictured above right) and Milan Lalkovic also netting, Knott one of two
first-year scholars in an unfamiliar midfield due to international
call-ups, including a first by Italy Under 21s for Fabio Borini.
The start to the game was nasty for Chelsea. With just over a minute gone
Fulham took the lead when David Elm, in space inside the area laid back
for fellow striker Michael Uwezu to scoop the ball beyond Turnbull and
into the net. It was too easy for the visitors, Chelsea not alert to
danger at a throw-in.
The response, however, was positive and rapid, Knott beating the offside
to race clear on to Sturridge's pass. Lalkovic made a supporting run in
the middle but was not needed, the 16-year-old thumping the ball low past
the keeper for his first reserve goal.
It is a wonderful run of scoring form for Knott who had notched in the
last four youth team games. He was playing full-back then; he was the left
side man in the midfield tonight.
Another member of the midfield diamond was forced off by injury just seven
minutes in, Michael Woods coming off badly in a block challenge. Billy
Clifford, another first year, taking his place as the anchor man.
Lalkovic, Sturridge's partner up front had a good attempt from an angle
after Nikki Ahamed had played a ball into space, but the keeper saved low
down.
This young Blues side were looking capable of scoring with every move
forward at this stage. On 20 minutes Lalkovic hit the base of the far post
after the Slovakian was found intelligently by McEachran, enjoying another
influential game at this level.
When Fulham did push back towards the other end, it took a timely
interception from schoolboy centre-back Danny Mills (pictured below) to
stop their attack after Jeffrey Bruma had lost out in a challenge for a
high bouncing ball.

Danny Mills
The game's first booking was for a foul on Lalkovic by Marsh-Brown.
Chelsea's good spell was dying away and the game became untidy. Fulham's
second goal came when David Elm reached Simon Davies's chest down faster
than Mills and finished well from 12 yards with Turnbull helpless.
Chelsea almost levelled within seconds again - Nana Ofori-Twumasi's
intended cross from the bye-line curling onto the bar.
The second-half was set on its way by Turnbull racing from his area and
clattering Uwezu in a chase for the ball. The Chelsea keeper was booked.
That was it for significant action near either area until the 58th minute
when Chelsea scored a working of footballing art to make it 2-2.
A rapid move down the pitch with Ahamed involved, was completed when
McEachran's perfectly weighted pass allowed Sturridge to side-step the
keeper expertly and finish with ease.
There was no chance to bask in the glory however as within three minute
the Cottagers were back in front. Bruma, the captain who was tested hard
on the night by the Fulham front two, conceded a free-kick. When it was
played in, the Blues left the Fulham with two against one at the far post
and it was straight forward for Kallio when fellow centre-back Smalling
knocked the ball into the middle.
Moscatiello then hit a dipping shot on the run not too far over and
Turnbull was lucky to escape when his miss-kick out fell to Elm but the
striker knocked his hat-trick chance wide.
Knott became Chelsea's second booking for sliding through Marsh-Brown with
quarter-of-an-hour to go, but that could not spoil a promising first
reserve team start for the England Under 17 international.
Knott looked to have played a superb ball to send Sturridge (pictured
below) one-on-one with the keeper with 10 minutes to go but the striker
was flagged just offside.

Sturridge
The third of Chelsea's three equalisers was another well-worked goal,
left-back Ben Gordon playing the ball into the path of Sturridge's strong
run down the left. The cross was excellent and Lalkovic was there to head
in his first reserve goal on his fourth appearance. He celebrated by
running 60 yards to shake hands with manager Steve Holland. There were
eight minutes left.
Substitute Daniel Philliskirk nearly won it for Chelsea with a volley from
the edge of the area as a free-kick was cleared but it dipped only as low
as the bar. Fulham had a late chance but Elm's header was straight at
Turnbull.
The end-to-end action continued into stoppage time, Clifford going just
wide from 30 yards, and then the visitor's centre-back Smalling went on a
storming raid into the area and beat Turnbull but hit the near post.
It was a cracking end to the game to warm those present on a chilly west
London night.
