ESSIEN'S TRIPLE COMEBACK IN THIS MONTH'S MAGAZINE
Posted on: Fri 17 Jul 2009
There's talk of more than one return for Michael Essien in this month's
Chelsea magazine, but the first will be fresh in every Blue's mind.
Following a cruciate ligament injury late in 2008, Essien returned to
fitness to help kick-start the team's return to form towards the end of
last season. After scoring goals against Juventus and Manchester City,
Essien then smashed an inch-perfect volley into the top corner against
Barcelona, which went on to win Chelsea's Goal of the Season Award.
With the season over, Essien returned to his home in Ghana, where he is
considered, without too much exaggeration, a footballing god. Travelling
to his home nation was his second comeback in 2009 after his injury, and
for his third Essien once again adorns the pages of Chelsea magazine.
In this month's instalment, our unstoppable Ghanaian midfielder talks
about his country's relationship with the beautiful game, his recent stint
in the World Cup qualifiers and how, with him playing for Chelsea, the
Blues are now number one in Ghana.
'We have more Chelsea fans in Ghana than before because back in the day
people only supported Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool or Spurs, but
now Chelsea have more fans than them, so it's good,' explained Essien.
'People come together in bars, they have the football on a big screen, and
I heard that every time Chelsea play now it's like the Black Stars are
playing.'
Essien admits he didn't have a coach until he was 16, but he describes the
freedom felt as a youngster playing football, and although he learnt the
sport on the streets in his bare feet, to a young Ghanaian it was all
about the game, not the facilities.
'If you're a kid in Africa and you're into football, you just want to play
everyday. It doesn't matter where, anywhere you go you just play, with
other people or by yourself - you don't care if the facilities are good or
not, you just want to play.'

Michael Essien in Chelsea magazine
One topic Chelsea magazine would not be able to avoid is Essien's five
months without football after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament
during Ghana's World Cup qualifier against Libya, from which he came back
in top form.
'I would settle for that form because it's not easy to return from injury
and play as normal. I think I must be one of the lucky ones.
'From the beginning it was clear that it was a bad injury and it would
take time to heal, but after four or five months my knee began to feel
good again.'
Joining his teammate in the latest edition of Chelsea magazine is Petr
Cech, who finished his fifth season with the Blues by lifting the FA Cup
at Wembley.
But after conceding seven goals in two games at Stamford Bridge, against
Bolton and Liverpool, Cech received more criticism than ever before. He
explains to Chelsea what helped him overcome the back page headlines to
finish another consistent season in Chelsea colours.
'After five years at the club, it was the most criticism I have had,' said
Cech. 'It's never something you like getting but I'm experienced enough to
know it's a matter of staying calm, accepting the mistakes and moving on.'

Our calm and collected keeper goes on to reveal the secrets to his
training sessions, the 'unspoken understanding' between goalkeepers and
why Chelsea's squad has such character, including how that character was
tested to the maximum last season.
Elsewhere in this month's edition of Chelsea magazine, Glenn Hoddle
relives the Blue revolution, which he instigated during the mid-Nineties,
creating a turnaround in the club's fortunes after his appointment as
manager.
Covering topics from the fans' reception upon his arrival, the
masterstroke of signing Ruud Gullitt, starting him off as a sweeper before
moving him forward, and what he believes is one of his biggest
achievements as a manager, reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup
Winners' Cup, Hoddle explains why Chelsea still holds a special place in
his heart.
And the fastest man on the planet is turned into a Blue, as Usain Bolt
meets the Chelsea contingent before speaking to our magazine.

Usain Bolt becomes a Blue
On top of all that, there's a break down of the new away kit before two
more interviews as Chelsea magazine speaks to early-Nineties defender Paul
Elliott and reserve team manager Paul Clement.
Elliott looks back over his career with the Blues, which included the
arrival of Hoddle, and the influence two years spent with Italian club
Pisa had on his chosen profession.
Clement offers a frank and honest opinion on the workings of Chelsea, as
he explains his rise through the ranks, which saw him appointed into the
reserve role once Brendan Rodgers left for Watford last season.
He also worked closely alongside Ray Wilkins and Guus Hiddink towards the
end of last season, managing to split his time between reserve and first
team football, a feat his describes in this exclusive interview.
After that there's a countdown of Chelsea's most influential players who
wore the shirt for only one season in the Top Ten Briefly Blue feature,
which looks back as far as 1905 and one of the club's first ever signings.
There's also the highly esteemed Tactics Board, which takes a closer look
at the offside trap and sweeper movement which was used to damaging effect
by AC Milan during Carlo Ancelotti's days as a midfielder for the Italian
giants.
That includes a background on the style of play adapted by the Italians
before a break down of the training techniques implemented at Cobham, this
month it's all about finding the winning formula.
An excellent ending as the pre-season tour begins.
The August edition of Chelsea magazine is in the Stadium Megastore and all
good newsagents now, priced at £3.25.
