Matic played 45 minutes while Cole and Ferreira both completed the entire 90 minutes, but it was Daniel Sturridge who grabbed the attention with a sublime hat-trick, while Fabio Borini and Jeffrey Bruma completed the scoring, the latter with an excellent free-kick. Ipswich took an early lead through Ed Upson in the first two minutes, but it wasn't long before Chelsea were getting a grip on the game. Ten minutes in Matic showed his capabilities with some excellent footwork inside the Ipswich box, eventually forcing a corner off his deflected shot. Sturridge worked the visiting goalkeeper moments later but his shot was a little tame. On 20 minutes the Serb found Sturridge with a rangy pass, but after making space for the shot the forward hesitated and found his way blocked by a host of red shirts. It wasn't long before Chelsea levelled though, but it was Fabio Borini who scored rather than his lively strike partner. The Italian took his first chance of the game expertly after Cole had threaded a ball through, smashing beyond the visiting goalkeeper. At the other end Ipswich forced three superb saves from Ross Turnbull in quick succession, pushing away good chances from point blank range. Five minutes later the Blues were in front, as Sturridge curled home a beauty, in off the bar, from 30 yards. That ensured a half-time lead and plenty of positives for coach Steve Holland to concentrate on. At the break Matic was replaced by Conor Clifford, who impressed with his tough tackling and simple passing. It was a more intricate ball that brought the third goal though, as Cole lifted his pass over the defence towards Sturridge, who smashed into the far bottom corner. The youngster repaid the favour shortly afterwards as he flicked Cole through on goal, only for the goalkeeper to prevent a fourth goal with a smart reflex save. By this point, 60 minutes in, Chelsea were in full control, with the extra technical ability and experience beginning to show. It was a piece of sublime individual skill that delivered the fourth, as Bruma curled a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner, a move he is quickly becoming renowned for. Sturridge claimed his hat-trick with just over 20 minutes remaining, bending around the keeper from 15 yards. Ipswich responded with a second of their own 15 minutes from time courtesy of Reggie Lambe, a loose ball going uncleared and fired beyond sub goalkeeper Jan Sebek. Borini had one further chance, latching onto a long ball from Ferreira and lifting the ball high over the keeper, only for a red-shirted defender to hook the ball off the line. All in all, it was a very satisfying afternoon's work. 'We were good individually which is what Carlo Ancelotti is looking for, with players wanting to put a challenge on, but also good very collectively,' said Holland. 'Obviously the highlight is Danny's hat-trick, and our all-round attacking play was very good. 'There are big gaps in the calendar so these games are important, Ipswich were excellent, well-organised and made it a quick-paced game that both sides will have benefited from.'
