ESSIEN: BEEN THERE, DONE THAT
Posted on: Fri 25 Sep 2009
If Joe Cole and Paulo Ferreira need reassurance during the early days of
their playing comebacks from serious knee injuries, they need only look at
the shining beacon in the dressing room that is Michael Essien.
'The Bison' was sweeping as majestically as ever across the open plains of
the Stamford Bridge midfield against Tottenham in his last game. He was
many people's man of the match six months after his own return from a
cruciate rupture. Clearly there is no lasting effect.
'Everyone was happy to see them come back,' the Ghanaian told
Chelseafc.com having watched Cole and Ferreira in action against QPR from
the subs' bench. 'They did very well to come back and play the whole game,
it is not easyand they had a very good game.
'You feel great when you first come back, you are so thrilled to be in the
team again and you are so excited. So that has happened to Joe and Paulo,
they are very happy to have a game to test their knees and their knees
feel good.'
Adrenalin is great for helping a player through on his initial return but
when the novelty wears off, it is not unknown for a dip to come and
playing to become more of a struggle.
'That didn't happen in my case,' reports Essien, 'but not everyone is the
same and hopefully they will come out if it easily and come back to their
normal routine.'
Looking personally, the Spurs win was an impressive return to his best for
Essien who had been below par five days earlier in the win over Porto.
Over the course of the season generally he declares he is happy with his
form and with Chelsea looking for a ninth consecutive win in all
competitions at Wigan (which would equal our club record set twice before
in August/September 2005 and December/January/February 2007/08), belief in
the squad is as high as during our number 5's early years at the club.
'All the players have the spirit that we want to win every game,' he says.
'All our games have been difficult but so far we make it look easy. We
have given everything we have to get three points.
'When we go to Wigan it has always been a difficult game but we always
managed to get our three points. We are expecting it to be another
difficult game but hopefully we can keep winning.'
