MY WEEK AT WORK: PAUL CLEMENT
Posted on: Sat 26 Sep 2009
Chelsea assistant first team coach Paul Clement has been enjoying plenty
of football this week, even pulling on a pair of boots himself. Here he
recalls his favourite moments of the past seven days.
The best goal I have seen this week…
I was going to say Craig Bellamy against Man United, but I think it is
Lionel Messi against Racing Santander. He cut in from the wing, kept on
going and then smashed it into the top corner on his left foot.
The best save I have seen this week…
Petr Cech from Jermain Defoe last Sunday. Defoe broke through at a crucial
moment in the game, and it was a good save with his feet.
Funniest moment…
Every week the funniest moment for me is staff football. There is always
something that happens. All the different levels of player that get
involve make it one of the best things about the week.
The worst training performance…
It would be harsh to speak about the players in that way, so I shall say
in staff football, the fitness and conditioning coach, Chris Jones, every
single week!
The best training performance…
Also in our staff game, I will say [first team fitness coach] Glen
Driscoll, who was certainly the most improved from the week before and put
in a good, solid performance. Last week I think he kicked people more than
he did the ball!
My favourite sound this week…
My favourite sound is always the final whistle when you have won the game.
It is simply the best sound in football, so either against Spurs or
against QPR.
Best food this week…
That was in the canteen here at Cobham. It was prawns with a linguine
pasta and a nice sauce. Beautiful.
Best entertainment…
Apart from What Katie Price Did Next on ITV2, which I always find very
entertaining (at this point breaking into laughter), it will be the
Manchester derby at the weekend. I saw bits and bobs, but then watched
Match of the Day afterwards.
The news story that stands out…
That's related to the time added on in that game, lots of funny texts and
pictures have been going round about it. Referees are becoming more aware
of time-wasting and the additions for injuries and substitutions. In our
own game against Stoke there were 13 minutes added on, which I think is a
record. It's only right that the correct time is added on if it is wasted,
and both our goals came in added periods.
And a special mention goes to…
Fabio Borini and Sam Hutchinson for making their first team debuts in the
Carling Cup. That's great for the youth development department here and
for the club as a whole. I worked a lot with Fabio when he arrived two
years ago, and I have with Hutch over the years, so it's pleasing to see
them come in and not look out of place.
Also I will say Joe Cole and Paulo Ferreira for getting back into action
after their long knee injuries, which was also pleasing to see.
