CECH: HARD FIGHT GOOD FOR US
Posted on: Thu 01 Oct 2009
Petr Cech recognised a game of two halves in Cyprus, but believes our
first half performance suggested defeat at Wigan had been a mere blip.
The goalkeeper was sent off in the weekend's 3-1 loss, meaning he will be
unavailable for the Premier League visit of Liverpool on Sunday, but saw
enough positives in the side's performance against APOEL to give him
confidence ahead of the Stamford Bridge clash.
'I think the first half was good, we controlled the game and made it easy
for us. We had the right game plan to control the counter attack, and when
they had the ball we knew how to eliminate the danger,' said the 27-year-
old, before picking out what still needs work.
'When you start the second half and give away the ball, then of course in
the Champions League the opponents have the quality to make the game
difficult for you and that's what happened.
'We knew how to cope with the pressure in the end and we managed to win
which is important. At this stage three points are very good and we are
happy with it. We had to fight hard in the end to get a result, which is
very positive for us.'
Carlo Ancelotti conceded after the game that his team was still not firing
on all cylinders, while Cech admitted it is difficult for the side to be
at its best in every game.
'We know we can have one game where things don't go well, and we have to
accept that at Wigan we haven't been on top of our game,' he said. 'We
lost the ball, we didn't win individual challenges or create big chances
to win the game. That's why we lost, so we needed a good reaction because
one bad game can happen, and it is a long time since we had a bad game.
'Today was about the reaction, and to get three points. Three points is
good for confidence and we can improve again.
'[Liverpool] is a huge game, we know they didn't have a good game (a 2-0
defeat to Fiorentina), they lost and will be eager to do well at Stamford
Bridge.
'Big games are big games and every player looks forward to these, not
really myself because I have to watch from the stand, but I will be there
and these games are there to be won. I hope we can do this.'
