YOUTH REPORT: SOUTHAMPTON 4 CHELSEA 3
Posted on: Sun 11 Oct 2009
A depleted Chelsea youth side travelled to Southampton this weekend for a
seven-goal thriller we eventually lost.
The Blues finally succumbed to a tough Saints side after taking the lead
three times. The home side's Sam Hoskins completed a second half double
with five minutes to play but for a Chelsea side who missed three strikers
due to international duty, the visitors played a good game.
Milan Lalkovic, Marko Mitrovic and Philipp Prosenik were all absent.
Instead Aziz Deen-Conteh, who would normally find himself in defence,
lined up alongside Bobby Devyne in attack.
Chelsea initially took the lead early on when Devyne followed up on a
blocked shot to tap in with only three minutes played but the Saints
levelled soon after, with Jordace Holder-Spooner smashing a left-footed
shot over Aldi Haxhia.
Josh McEachran, who sat at the top of a midfield diamond, then put Chelsea
ahead again just before the half-hour mark, sending a well-placed freekick
over the Southampton defence and into the net.
But, as the dramatic encounter continued, the hosts managed to put
themselves level once more before the break. Holder-Spooner snatched his
second after latching onto a Daryl McLean through ball and calmly slotting
past Haxhia.
Minutes after the restart Chelsea were in front again. This time it was
from a converted penalty after Ciaran Harper made an awful tackle inside
the box. Billy Knott (pictured) stepped up to coolly claim Chelsea's third.
Hoskins then replaced McLean and brought a fresh pair of legs into the mix
for Southampton.
It wasn't long before the change made a difference as Hoskins found
himself at the far post, from where he headed in a Ben Reeves freekick to
make it 3-3.
Hoskins then wrapped up the win after collecting a Sam Argent pass and
sending the ball beyond Haxhia's reach with his first touch in the 85th
minute.
'We should have won today,' said youth team manager Dermot Drummy after
the game. 'We played some great football and chances wise were on top of
the game. We made a silly mistake for the final goal and it cost us.
'Overall though I'm really impressed with the boys because we scored three
goals away from home without any of our three forwards.'
