YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 3 CHARLTON ATHLETIC 0
Posted on: Sat 17 Oct 2009
After conceding 10 goals in the past four fixtures, the youth side played
a good defensive game to maintain a clean sheet and pushed forward in the
second-half.
A wonder strike after the break from left-back Billy Knott doubled
Chelsea's lead, adding to an opener from Marco Mitrovic (pictured), who
also finished the scoring from the penalty spot.
Niclas Heimann replaced the injured Sam Walker between the posts while
Aliu Djalo wore the captain's armband.
Despite the eventual score, the first half was a fairly uneventful affair,
with Chelsea's only shot resulting in our opening goal.
Seeing space down the left flank, Gokhan Tore broke, using some clever
footwork to beat Charlton's full back, and launched a well-placed cross to
the near post.
Mitrovic, who had reacted well to Tore's initial burst goalwards, sprinted
into the box to tap the cross over the line with 15 minutes played.
Like Chelsea, Charlton failed to create many chances on goal in the first
half, and when they did, Heimann was on hand to collect with ease. The
closest the visitors came to equalising was a shot which bounced wide
minutes before the break.
The Blues doubled the lead seconds after the restart, as Knott smashed a
left-footed scorcher into the top corner from 20 yards out.
It was the result of some clever build-up by Chelsea, as Mitrovic latched
onto a Djalo through ball before releasing Knott on the edge of the box.
There would be another 30 minutes of competitive action before Chelsea
made it three.
After collecting a pass from substitute Bobby Devyne, who had replaced
Milan Lalkovic, Mitrovic was cut to the ground inside the Charlton area.
The Swedish international stepped up to coolly convert the penalty,
slotting into the right corner after sending the Charlton keeper the wrong
way.
Then, as Chelsea searched for a fourth, Tore, who had already seen two
chances saved, was adjudged to be offside after finding himself one-on-one
with the keeper.
The game finished with Billy Clifford smashing a shot over the bar from 25
yards out, ending an exciting second half for Chelsea.
'Some of the play was fantastic today,' said youth team manager Dermot
Drummy after the game.
'Everyone performed really well and we showed that we don't just play
defensive football, we score goals as well. I defy anyone to say we're
boring side,' he added.
