YOUTH REPORT: WEST HAM UNITED 3 CHELSEA 1
Posted on: Sat 14 Nov 2009
A disappointing Under 18s' display resulted in a first defeat in four
games, made worse by a red card for Billy Knott.
Second best to West Ham throughout Saturday's game, the young Blues missed
early chances when Knott flashed a great cross over and Josh McEachran and
George Saville had shots, but overall they did not start the game well.
The Hammers took the lead through Robert Hall which put Chelsea even
further on the back foot in difficult conditions.
Thirty seconds into the second-half, schoolboy centre-back Daniel Mills
Pappoe was caught in possession and Hall scored again to make it 2-0 for
the home team.
Chelsea improved and Marko Mitrovic (pictured) converted a cross to make
it 2-1, the Swede's sixth youth team goal of the season, but more poor
defending allowed Conor Okus to score and it was 3-1 with 10 minutes
remaining.
Minutes earlier, left-back Knott, who has been in splendid form with five
youth team goals this season, was sent off for dissent.
Chelsea had a goal ruled out for offside late on and Bobby Devyne had a
couple of chances but was denied by good goalkeeping.
'Billy Knott was against his old club and I spoke to him before the game
about the need to keep composed,' reports youth team manager Dermot Drummy.
'He has to learn from his errors. We don't know if it is a one or three-
match ban yet and with the FA Youth Cup coming up, he could learn the hard
way.
'For the first time this season we didn't control the game. Last week I
was not happy when we won but that was due to sloppy play. This week it
was making the wrong decisions and being technically poor.
'We tried to play our football on a very windy day but against a team that
pressured well, our first and second touches weren't the standard
required. Tactically we didn't find enough space.
'It was a very disappointing result because we had a number of players who
played in the reserves and they came down and didn't perform.'
