THE THURSDAY INTERVIEW: MIROSLAV STOCH
Posted on: Thu 26 Nov 2009
With all the talk that has quite rightly followed the promising
contribution young Chelsea players made to the win over Wolves at the
weekend, the progress one Academy product is making during his season away
overseas could be overlooked.
However out of sight is not out of mind as far as the official Chelsea
website is concerned so this week we spoke to Miroslav Stoch to find out
how life is for the young Slovakian over in the Netherlands.
On the face of it, it is hard to imagine how it could be going any better
for the winger who turned 20 last month.
His loan club, FC Twente, are finding good use for his nippy running,
close control and eye for goal, and it is doing them no harm at all. They
are sitting two points clear at the top of the Dutch top flight, the
Eredivsie, and are undefeated in domestic games. They have won their last
nine.
On top of that, Stoch was part of the Slovakia side that finished top of
their qualification group. It looks like he is World Cup bound.
'I can say I am happy,' Miroslav confirms when the above evidence for his
good year is put to him.
'We are doing well and winning all the time so I am getting opportunities
to play every game, and that is why I came to Holland. I am starting every
game. I missed just one against Feyenoord when I was injured.
'I have scored six goals, four in the league and two in the Europa
League,' he reports.
'I don't know if I am a better player now but I hope so. I need to improve
many things but I am getting some experience which is good.'
Find video clips of some of the goals he has scored this season and you
will view the type of strike fans grew accustomed to seeing in Chelsea
youth and reserve matches - dribbling his way in from the wing and
smashing the ball low and hard.

The ability to play on either flank was exploited in the Chelsea
development teams, as it has been by FC Twente.
'We are playing 4-3-3,' Miroslav says. 'In the beginning I was playing
right winger but after a few games the coach changed it and he put me on
the left and he kept me there. I prefer it. I can cut the ball inside and
shoot with my right foot, or go on the outside and cross with my left.'
While across the leagues in Europe there increasingly appears to be a
permanent elite of clubs dominating the top places, it has been anything
but the case in the Netherlands for the past 18 months. Last season AZ
Alkmaar became the first club outside of the tradition 'Big Three' of
Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord to win the league since 1981. Now FC Twente, last
season's runners-up, are out in front.
Stoch's fellow attacking players, the experienced Blaise Nkufo and Costa
Rican new signing Bryan Ruiz, have been among the goals for the club from
the city of Enscehde. It remains to be seen if a car accident this week in
which midfielder Theo Janssen suffered minor injuries has any impact on
the season.
Guiding Stoch and his temporary team-mates is Steve McClaren, who followed
Bobby Robson's example and chose Holland for his next step after losing
the England job. Robson went to PSV.
'From the first moment I came to the club I liked Steve McClaren very
much,' declares Miroslav.
'He is a good manager off the field and on the field and that is really
important. You need to have someone behind you who you know is really
good. And everyone likes his style here.
'He speaks to me in English and everyone in the changing room and all the
staff can speak in English which is especially good for me because I can't
speak Dutch, it is too hard as a language!
'In every newspaper and everywhere on TV they are speaking about FC
Twente. The atmosphere in the changing room is that we have to keep
working hard. Everyone is speaking about us, but we will see later.
'Blaise is our top scorer and he is doing well, but we are playing as a
team, we all work hard and we won some games this season in the last
minute. We were 2-2 or 1-1 and we scored the winning goal in stoppage
time, and we have done this three or four times this season. We try to
work hard and play until the last minute. We are a really good team.
'The Premier League in England is the best competition in the world for
me, but here in Holland all the teams try to go forward. In England, when
Chelsea try to play some small teams at home like Stoke or Hull, those
teams just try to defend. In Holland it is different and when some small
teams come to us they try to play football and try to go forward. That is
the main difference.'
It is little wonder that playing Stoke sticks in Stoch's mind. He had a
hand in the stoppage-time winning goal against them last season during the
brightest of his five sub appearances so far.
Chelsea fans will hopefully need only wait until June to watch him play
live matches again. It was a notable achievement by Slovakia to make it to
South Africa. Their ex-countrymen in the Czech Republic were not so
successful.

Stoch
'We are rivals but I don't know what the fans think about them not
qualifying. Maybe they are happy, maybe not, I don't know.
'If we had beaten Slovenia, the Czech Republic could go to the play-offs
but we lost. It wasn't on purpose! We tried to look after ourselves, it
was unlucky.
'We went through for the first time in Slovakia's history and everyone is
excited. They are all watching football now and can't wait for June. Also
for the draw next month.
'The last few international games I have played from the beginning and it
is really good, getting some experience of international football as well,
so I hope I will get the chance to go to the World Cup and play there
also.'
He has one goal from nine full international matches. From now until the
World Cup he will remain at FC Twente.
'I am watching all the time the Chelsea first team games, and the reserve
team also. I know everything that is happening. I speak with some lads
from the reserves like Carl Magnay, Nana [Ofori-Twumasi] and [fellow
Slovakian] Milan Lalkovic. Also after almost every game Frank Arnesen
calls me and asks how was the game, how did I do. It is very open with
Frank.'
'I don't know if I will be able to visit Chelsea at all because I get some
days off at Christmas and I will go home and then I will be back in
Holland in January. It is a bit difficult when you are playing every
Thursday and Sunday. If I get the chance, I will go there but I am coming
back to London after the season anyway.'
Who knows, given that FC Twente have the possibility of making it through
to the knockout stage of the Europa League, we might see him on English
soil even earlier. It has been a mixed group stage for McClaren's men with
an away win in Turkey but then a defeat away to Moldovan side FC Sherrif
and a home draw against bottom club Steaua Bucharest.
It was in a win in Holland against the Moldovans that Miroslav scored both
his European goals, the second an 89th minute long-range winner after a
fine run.
'We are in the Europa League next week at home to Fenerbahc,e but I am
suspended as I have two yellow cards,' he explains.
'First we need to get through, three teams can still go through, and it
will be hard, but maybe we will face Liverpool or someone like that.'
Miroslav Stoch has yet to play under Carlo Ancelotti, but make no mistake,
the manager will be aware of what a Chelsea player is achieving over near
the Dutch border with Germany. And next time you hear him talking about
the potential there is already within the club without the need to buy
players, don't forget a young Slovakian who is developing quickly out of
our view.
