The Chelsea pair have both bounced back from injury problems to earn nominations for the prestigious honour, alongside other candidates Samuel Eto'o, Yaya Toure and Tresor Mputu Mabi. Essien is the only previous winner on the list, having been victorious in 2006, while Drogba was today named the ninth best player in the world by journalists voting for the Ballon D'Or. After cruciate ligament damage in September 2008, the Ghanaian midfielder returned to the Chelsea side in the spring, and it was as if he hadn't been away, scoring key goals against Juventus and Manchester City before the season's end, while this campaign he has been his usual dominant self in the centre of the park, highlighted in Sunday's 3-0 win over Arsenal. Drogba too came into 2009 with injury concerns for his knee, but under the guidance of Guus Hiddink forged a sensational partnership in attack with Nicolas Anelka. With eight goals in his last eight games up to Arsenal, Droba's Chelsea record in this calendar year is 25 goals in 44 games.
