MATIC LOOKING FOR ROVERS START
Posted on: Wed 02 Dec 2009
Nemanja Matic is hoping for a full debut at Blackburn tonight as he
continues to familiarise himself to the English game.
The 21-year-old Serbian international was a summer arrival from Slovakian
side MFK Kosice, but had to sit out the opening weeks of his Chelsea
career due to a broken foot, an injury sustained at the European Under 21
Championships in June.
Months of hard work look to be paying off, as a string of eye-catching
displays in the reserves earned him a substitute appearance at Stamford
Bridge against Wolves last weekend.
'I was happy to get the chance and gave my maximum,' he said, using
friend and team-mate Branislav Ivanovic as a handy interpreter. 'Of course
we have great players at Chelsea and it is important I enjoy it and that I
learn more from the other players.
'I like the football in England, it is very quick and strong physically.
I try to prepare for this, I work in the gym to help and I hope I can play
some more.'

Ivanovic and Matic in training
During the months of his adaptation, Matic has been fortunate to be able
to rely on the presence of compatriot Ivanovic to bridge the language gap.
Matic was happy to report improvements in his use and understanding of
English, leaning on Ivanovic's greater vocabulary only when needed.
'In five or six months I will speak very good English, now is not so
good,' he conceded. 'Now at the moment my English is okay and I can
understand simple things, and most things about football I can understand,
these are the important words.'
It promises to be a big few months for both men, with Ivanovic now
presented with an opportunity to make the right-back berth his own after
Jose Bosingwa's injury, and Matic pressing for greater involvement in
first team affairs now his injury problems are behind him.
There is also the small matter of a World Cup to come in June. Ivanovic is
a shoo-in for the Serbia squad, but Matic, by his own admission has work
to do.
'I think I can go in the squad, and I hope I do, especially if I am
playing here,' said the two-cap midfielder. For now though, it is a second
Chelsea game on his mind, and the prospect of a semi-final place in a
major competition.
