Carlo Ancelotti has good news for Chelsea and Ghana fans, after explaining
he expects the midfielder to be fit in time for the African Cup of Nations.
Essien has been injured since December 8 with a hamstring tear sustained
against APOEL, but his manager has allayed fears that the 27-year-old
would miss the African Cup, instead explaining that he will remain at the
club's Cobham training ground for a few days for further treatment.
'Essien will stay here one week because he needs to do treatment and he
will be ready to go. He will go I think, in one week he will be ready to
go to play for the African Cup,' said the Italian.
Ancelotti added he has no fear about the condition of his African players
when they return, with Salomon Kalou, Didier Drogba and John Mikel Obi
joining Essien on international duty.
'They have to play a good competition, we are not worried about this
because the players are used to playing a lot of games during the season
and we are not worried. I think they will return in good condition,' the
manager said.
'We have African players and I think that when they have to play for the
national team it is no problem. It is like the European players, every top
player has to go in the national team. It is not a problem with the
Africans because it is not a problem for the Europeans.'
