IVORY COAST BEGIN CAMPAIGN GOALLESS, DESPITE DROGBA
Posted on: Mon 11 Jan 2010
Didier Drogba started Ivory Coast's first Africa Cup of Nations match
against Burkina Faso, while Salomon Kalou appeared as a late substitute in
Monday evening's goalless draw.
Drogba had a penalty, which looked to be a certain spot kick, disallowed
in the opening minutes as he began his side's attacking form which would
continue through much of the match.
With three minutes of the first half remaining, the Chelsea striker nearly
helped his nation take the lead with a beautiful first-touch tap down from
the edge of the box. The ball landed perfectly at Emmanuel Kone's feet but
the midfielder's subsequent shot strayed wide.
At half time the Ivory Coast were looking the much stronger of the two
sides. The second half began with Ivory Coast attacking once again,
although they failed to find Drogba with any final passes, denying him a
shot on target.
Kalou replaced Gervinho with 20 minutes left, seconds before Drogba won a
freekick 20 yards out from goal which he took quickly but didn't to beat
the keeper.

Africa Cup of Nations Drogba
Burkina Faso's defence played well, twice denying Drogba further chances
and forcing him to shoot inches wide. His best chance of scoring came when
he broke towards the far post only to cut in and flick a shot into the
keeper's grasp with five minutes remaining.
Despite Ivory Coast's dominance against the least-fancied side in what is
now a three-team group following Togo's withdrawal, the game ended with
both sides earning a point. Ivory Coast play Ghana on Friday.

NIGERIANS SUFFER AGAINST REIGNING CHAMPIONS
Posted on: Tue 12 Jan 2010
John Mikel Obi's African Nations got off to a bad start as Nigeria were
beaten by holders Egypt, despite taking the lead in Benguela.
The Chelsea man figured in a more advanced role than he does at club
level, slotting in alongside Fulham's Dickson Etuhu in the centre of the
park before his late substitution.
Egypt had the better of the opening stages, Mohamed Zidan forcing Vincent
Enyeama inside the first five minutes, but it was Nigeria who scored
first, Chinedu Obasi netting on 11 minutes.
The forward received a pass in the right channel and cut inside, firing
powerfully into the opposite corner to set his country on their way.
Mikel was impressing with his fine passing, but Egypt drew level just
after the half-hour mark through Emad Meteeb, who beat the offside trap
and rounded the advanced Enyeama, slotting into the empty net.
Mikel, 22, almost caught a site of goal in the 49th minute, but just took
one touch too many inside the Egypt area, allowing them to clear. He would
have been regretting it inside five minutes, Ahmed Hassan's effort
deflecting off Taye Taiwo and into the far corner.
Egypt should have been further ahead when Meteeb went through again, but
fired his shot way over the crossbar allowing the Nigerians an opportunity
to get back into the game.
With 23 minutes left, the powerful midfielder shot narrowly wide as he
advanced forward. It was his final major contribution before being
substituted with 11 minutes remaining, replaced by Portsmouth forward
Nwankwo Kanu.
The change by under-pressure coach Shaibu Amodu did no good though, as
Egypt wrapped up the win five minutes before the end, Nagy Gedo firing low
into the bottom corner.
