A Marko Mitrovic hat-trick set the young Blues on their way, while Milan Lalkovic added a fourth just after half-time, but West Ham fought back and almost pulled off a surprise draw, but in the end head back east empty- handed. Kick-off was delayed by half an hour due to West Ham's late arrival at Cobham on a damp and miserable morning, which meant the visitors rushing through their warm-up exercises while the Chelsea youngsters were able to undertake a prolonged preparation, and it showed from the start. Inside the opening minute, Gokhan Tore burst down the left and inside, releasing Mitrovic who might have pulled the trigger but instead opted to pass square, and the West Ham keeper was able to smother, and then shortly afterwards Milan Lalkovic bent a free-kick on target from range. Conor Clifford demonstrated his long-range shooting ability, but like his Slovakian team-mate before him, he shot straight at the goalie. When he did opt to shoot, Mitrovic showed them how it was done, smashing home first-time from inside the area after a sublime passing move 10 minutes in. Josh McEachran supplied the final ball, but at least three others had been involved in the build-up. At the other end Sam Walker parried well to deny an immediate equaliser before saving low at near full stretch, quite an achievement for the 6'5 stopper. On either flank, and occasionally on each other's, Lalkovic and Tore were giving their markers the runaround, but were just lacking a final ball. In contrast, West Ham made Chelsea pay at the other end when Walker failed to claim a corner, allowing one of the Hammers' tall centre-halves a simple header into an empty net. Parity didn't last long though, as within two minutes Mitrovic had headed Chelsea back in front, Tore clearly heeding words from those around him, swinging over a perfect corner. Just after the half-hour the young Turk almost stretched the advantage further, but dragged his shot just wide of the far post. Mitrovic almost claimed a hat-trick from the move of the game, Billy Knott spreading a superb pass across from left-back to Lalkovic on the right, the winger quickly crossing to the near post where a defender just got there ahead of the Swedish forward. Mitrovic was not going to be denied though, and on the stroke of half-time he turned on the edge of the West Ham area, and shot, the effort deflecting up and over the keeper and into the corner, a strong 3-1 lead in the bag at the break. It took less than a minute for three to become four, Knott reaching the bye-line and crossing to the far post where Lalkovic nodded down, a slip in concentration taking it through the keeper's palms and over the line. Mitrovic bicycle-kicked over before the keeper saved from Knott and Tore, while Chelsea's centre-back pairing of Mills Pappoe and Aziz Deen-Conteh were kept busy by West Ham's lively counter-attacking. Both made well- timed sliding challenges to keep the score down. The visitors came right back into the game with 20 minutes remaining though, a foul by Billy Clifford resulting in a free-kick being swept in from eight yards out, and then a third being scrambled home to make it 4-3. A comfortable win was now looking like it could be two points dropped. Kaby struck the post from range for Chelsea before West Ham pressed for what had seemed an unlikely equaliser. Lalkovic pulled up with what appeared a hamstring problem ten minutes before the end, a concern for Portsmouth in midweek, and his replacement Bobby Devyne almost made certain of the points but his angled shot was well saved. West Ham, for all their huff and puff, could threaten no more, meaning the Blues hung no for an entertaining if nervy victory. Now it is on to Stamford Bridge on Thursday, where admission is free.
