YOUTH REPORT: CRYSTAL PALACE 1 CHELSEA 1
Posted on: Sat 30 Jan 2010
The Blues youth team came back from an early opener to even the scores
when Anton Rodgers' phenomenal 30-yard strike hit the net before half
time.
Despite a few of the team playing in the FA Youth Cup midweek, Dermot
Drummy's side went on to become the much stronger team during a second
half full of chances, with Bobby Devyne and Marko Mitrovic hitting the
post.
With several of the squad hopeful of a reserve place this week, Drummy
fielded three school boys, including a debutant. Under 16 Todd Kane
lined-up at right-back, next to Under 15 Nathaniel Chalobah at centre-
half. On the right of the midfield diamond was Under 16 John Swift.
The game began strongly in the host's favour as Crystal Palace took the
lead inside the first 10 minutes.
Following a deft cross, which skimmed along the face of goal, Palace took
the lead with a simple tap in but it did little to dampen the Blues' mood.
Chelsea immediately retaliated with good link up play taking place in
midfield, while Devyne and Mitrovic threatened up front.
It took 28 minutes for the equaliser to arrive as Rodgers (pictured)
launched a sensational strike into the top corner. The Palace keeper could
only watch as the ball hit the back of his net.
Devyne produced one more chance on goal before half time arrived with the
scores even. But with the second half under way, it was clear Chelsea had
taken control.
Dominating possession mostly around the Palace box, the best chance of the
second half came when Devyne broke into the box where he found himself
one-on-one with the Palace keeper. There he slotted a shot down a narrow
channel goal-ward and watched as it ricocheted off the post.
Then Mitrovic also hit the post as Chelsea continued to hunt for a second
before Rodgers created the game's last chance after dancing his way into
the box and sending a shot wide.
'We came here knowing it was going to be a tough game,' said youth team
manager Drummy.
'Crystal Palace are a physical and strong side and they play very good
football. But despite the fact we only played midweek, the boys were
fantastic today. We had some debutants and I was really pleased with their
performance, but I was also really happy with the whole side, they did
well.'
