RESERVE REPORT: ASTON VILLA 3 CHELSEA 1
Posted on: Mon 01 Feb 2010
The reserves' first away game of 2010 ended in defeat at Villa Park but it
was a performance that didn't warrant the scoreline.
A side containing Nemanja Matic, Fabio Borini and Gael Kakuta, plus by the
final whistle three of the FA Youth Cup side, responded quickly to an
early goal conceded and played the better football of the first-half
against the league leaders.
A freshly-shorn Conor Clifford continues to worry opposition keepers
whenever he has the ball 30 yards or less from goal and within four
minutes of this game struck woodwork, controlling a clearance and looping
a shot onto the bar with Villa keeper Bevan backpeddling hard.
The home team had defenders Wilfred Bouma and Curtis Davies in their
defence and Nathan Delfouneso up front but it was Andreas Wiemann who gave
them a seventh-minute lead.
Rhys Taylor in the Chelsea goal had already done well to claw a corner on
its way but when the Austrian shot moments later, it was a disappointing
attempt to save after the defence had been caught open when a kick from
the back was headed on.
Chelsea reserve team manager Steve Holland will have been pleased with the
response however and it was one of the defenders just found out that
equalised two minutes later.
Villa had the chance to deal with Carl Magnay's ball in after a corner was
poorly cleared but missed their chance and Kenny Strickland pounced from
eight yards (pictured below). It was the centre back's first reserve goal
for Chelsea.

Fabio Borini was only inches away from heading a cross in from nearly
under thecrossbar. Jacob Mellis had hung a cross over having benefitted
from a great Kakuta reverse pass.
Kakuta was pulling many of the strings as Chelsea controlled the midfield
with neat pass and move football.
Mellis, recently returned from a loan at Southampton, caused danger with a
ball across the box but the half ended with a tale of two Villa headers.
Davies met a corner and Taylor palmed it behind before Ciaran Clark at the
far post should have scored for the home side after a deep free-kick found
his run round the back.
It was quarter-of-an-hour into a second-half in which Chelsea had not
matched their level in the first when Villa reclaimed the lead. A corner
was pushed straight out by Taylor but the ball was kept alive by two
headers. Clark atoned for his first-half miss with a gymnastic bicycle
kick finish.
Lichaj smashed a curler just wide and Villa were now on top.
However Chelsea stepped it up once again and Mellis should have done
better than to shoot wide when Kakuta gave him a chance.
Borini (pictured below) and Matic were replaced early in the half, both
having suffered small knocks, and Marko Mitrovic and Josh McEachran were
given some minutes at this level.

Taylor made a catch when Curtis Davies headed a free-kick on-target but
then a real chance for a Chelsea equaliser came before the end. Kakuta
showed good vision to find Mellis from deep in his own half, the
midfielder taking the long pass well and striking hard but Bevan stood up
and saved.
Villa extinguished the Blues hopes with a breakaway goal on 90 minutes
with Chelsea understandably lacking numbers at the back. Hogg headed for
goal across Taylor's dive and Wiemann tapped in.
