YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 0 ARSENAL 0
Posted on: Sat 06 Feb 2010
Josh McEachran had two goals disallowed for offside as Chelsea were held
to a goalless draw by Arsenal at Cobham on Saturday.
The young midfielder twice kept his cool to beat the Arsenal goalkeeper
when one-on-one but twice was flagged offside against a strong Arsenal
team.
Over the 90 minutes it was Chelsea who had the better chances, McEachran's
miss from close range the most memorable, though home goalkeeper Sam
Walker did well to deny the visitors on a number of occasions.
Missing a number of regulars, coach Dermot Drummy was able to include
first-year scholars Ben Sampayo and George Saville from the start, while
schoolboys Danny Mills Pappoe and Nathaniel Chalobah were the central
defensive partnership.
Chelsea began positively, Aziz Deen-Conteh making a surging run down the
left, and then Gokhan Tore being caught just offside after a smart flick
from Josh McEachran.
On the back foot, Chalobah, capped by England Under 17s, was alert enough
to stop an Arsenal attack with a well-timed sliding challenge.
It was 15 minutes before either side had a sight of goal, Tore bending a
rangy free-kick over the Arsenal bar before another McEachran run set up
Billy Clifford to cross, but his centre was too high for the diminutive
Kaby.
On 25, McEachran should have put the Blues in front after starting a
superb move from the centre-circle, spreading the ball wide to Deen-Conteh.
The left-back advanced before sending over a curling cross to the far post,
but McEachran, who only needed to prod home, lifted the ball up and over
the bar. It was unlucky but encouraging.
Chalobah was booked shortly afterwards and then Clifford headed over from
a Tore corner. It wasn't one-way traffic though, and Kaby had to clear an
Arsenal effort off the line after some penalty box pinball following a
corner.
Visiting forward Luke Freeman, who made his first-team debut for
Gillingham as a 15-year-old, was denied just before half-time by a superb
block from Mills Pappoe, the shot looked to be on its way in past Walker,
who then made a reflex save from Conor Henderson low to his left, as the
Gunners gained the upper hand.
Walker made the first save of the second half also, though this was rather
more straightforward as he gathered a tame shot. At the opposite end Marko
Mitrovic worked his way into a shooting position but could not finish.
Another Tore corner caused problems for Arsenal, the goalkeeper's weak
punch falling kindly for Mills Pappoe, whose looping header was just wide.
Another error from the Arsenal stopper presented McEachran with the ball
inside the area on 57 minutes, the midfielder first shooting straight at
the goalkeeper and then laying off to Clifford, whose low shot was blocked.
Despite it being a tight game, coach Dermot Drummy would have been
justified in thinking his side deserved the lead.
McEachran stung the keeper's palms with an ambitious 35-yard volley before
Walker made two outstanding saves from Freeman.
First, the forward had shrugged off Mills Pappoe, no mean feat, and was
bearing down on goal but the Chelsea keeper denied him, staying big as
long as possible before saving low, before then diving at full stretch to
his left to push over a more powerful effort.
By now Chelsea sub Rohan Ince had been introduced, a first competitive
outing for him since cruciate ligament injury last season. It was a
welcome return and his first input was to beat his man in midfield and
lift a ball over the top for Mitrovic, who was just short of connecting
before the Arsenal keeper snaffled it away.
It was the same combination that brought a free-kick on the edge of the
Arsenal box, with Tore and McEachran hovering over. Kaby laid it to the
left and the young Turk struck it hard onto the corner of post and
crossbar, the closest either side had come.
McEachran finally found the net with around 15 minutes remaining, but the
offside flag prevented the goal from standing after Tore had slipped him
through.
There was little appeal from the Blues that time, but when the playmaker
did it again with the full time whistle approaching, there was more of an
outcry, though the decision still looked the correct one.
It meant a rare goalless game for the youth team, whose attacking style
this season has meant goals normally flowing at either end. The draw
against a club famed for producing youngsters provides plenty of
positives, though you suspect Carlo Ancelotti, a spectator for the second
half, will want more when the senior sides meet at Stamford Bridge on
Sunday.
