YOUTH REPORT: CHARLTON ATHLETIC 2 CHELSEA 2
Posted on: Fri 12 Feb 2010
A Daniel Philliskirk brace in the second-half brought Chelsea Under 18s
back from a two-goal deficit today.
The Blues travelled to Charlton, where a tough game ensued. The line-up in
defence included Rohan Ince, who made his first start since returning from
injury, with Josh McEachran at the tip of the diamond controlling much of
the play throughout.
It was McEachran who would set up the winner for Philliskirk (pictured),
who had already pulled one back for Chelsea with a penalty strike earlier
in the second half.
To begin with, Dermot Drummy lined his side up with a diamond formation,
with Kaby Djalo captaining from midfield. In front of him were Philliskirk
and Milan Lalkovic.
It took only two minutes for the Blues to threaten when Billy Clifford hit
the bar from the edge of the box. That was the first of three shots that
ricocheted off the woodwork.
Continuing the strong start, Philliskirk then sent a shot screaming inches
over the bar with 10 minutes played but the deadlock wasn't broken until
half-an-hour in when a Charlton striker broke into the box before beating
Chelsea keeper Jan Sebek with a nutmeg.
Chelsea immediately tried to retaliate with Lalkovic hitting the bar from
10 yards out following a clever through ball from McEachran.
The young Blues went into the break a goal down and 15 minutes after the
restart Charlton doubled their lead. This time it was their other striker
who found the net when Sebek parried a shot into the frontman's path. He
finished with a clinical shot into the bottom right.
It took another six minutes for Chelsea to pull one back when substitute
Bobby Devyne was brought down inside the area, giving the referee no
choice but to award a penalty.
Philliskirk stepped up to take the spot-kick which he calmly squeezed into
the bottom left making it 2-1. The game was back on.
Then, two minutes later, Chelsea produced the best display in the fixture
with smart, one-touch football building towards the Charlton box.
McEachran released Philliskirk on the edge of it; he in turn set up
Clifford who sent a shot bouncing off the bar.
The equaliser arrived 10 minutes from time when another influential
McEachran through ball found Philliskirk just inside the box. He then
struck home from close range, earning Chelsea the draw.
'We hit the bar a few times, we played a lot of attacking football and to
be fair to Charlton they countered us very well but I would say we were
the stronger side today,' reported youth team manager Drummy after the
game.
'When we were 2-0 down Charlton began to play very defensively and it
looked like it was going to be difficult but we just kept playing. The
spirit was really good; to come back from 2-0 down shows we were playing
really good football and we're really pleased.
'McEachran had a brilliant game, his vision and ball control was fantastic
and Danny Mills Pappoe really rallied the troops from defence, but it was
a good performance all round,' added Drummy.
