Drogba, winner of the award in 2006 (pictured), and Essien, who has been in the final three for the past four years but never the winner, are joined by a player they will soon be in Champions League contest with - Inter's Samuel Eto'o. The Chelsea striker is one of the final three nominees for the 2009 award along with Michael Essien and Samuel Eto'o and was the winner for 2006. However there was controversy a year later when Drogba couldn't attended the awards ceremony in Mali which was being held during the Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana. It was believed because of that Frederic Kanoute was named Player of the Year instead. Drogba publicly withdrew from the running for future African Football Confederation (CAF) awards. Speaking exclusively to Chelsea TV this week, Drogba revealed that bridges have since been built. 'That was the past,' he said. 'We all sat down and spoke about it - Mr Hayatou (the CAF president) and the people from the Ivory Coast Federation - so I think everything is good now. 'It is a good trophy and a big honour for a player to win it, especially this year which is so special for the African continent. To win it would be very nice.'
