RESERVE REPORT: CHELSEA 1 ARSENAL 2
Posted on: Mon 15 Feb 2010
Chelsea were made to pay for missed chances on a cold night at Brentford
when neither defence looked comfortable but the visitors were able to take
a two-goal lead.
Arsenal were ahead at the break and doubled the advantage late in the
second half, but then the influential Nemanja Matic (pictured above)
scored from close range to set up a finish in which Gael Kakuta came close
to levelling it up.
Unfortunately it was a night when Fabio Borini's finishing did match his
ability to find chances in or around the Arsenal penalty area. The Italian
under 21 international struck woodwork twice as well as missing other
opportunities.
He was the central striker in a line-up lacking a few regulars who will be
on Youth Cup duty on Wednesday.
Arsenal had the first strike, a well-hit effort from Luke Freeman over the
bar and there was an escape when Chelsea left-back Ben Gordon headed a
cross back into the danger zone but his team-mates managed to clear.
Arsenal enjoyed territorial superiority in the opening stages and were too
often winning the ball off the two Chelsea full-backs, Gordon and Nana
Ofori-Twumasi (below), but Chelsea did break free when Mellis found
Kakuta's run down the middle. However the offside flag went up.

A Kenny Strickland ball over the top was just out of reach of Borini
before at the other end, Strickland was in position to block a shot from
Gilles Sunu 11 who had cut inside.
There had been precious little for Chelsea's forward three to feed off but
on 26 minutes Borini almost scored an inspirational goal all of his own
making. On the run and wide of the area, his looping shot from the right
dipped viciously and smashed off the crossbar to safety with the keeper
beaten. Then Liam Birdcutt saw a 25-yarder deflected just wide in a good
spell for Chelsea.
On 30 minutes Borini had a big claim to have put the ball over the line,
this time from a couple of yards out. In truth he should have smashed it
into the back of the net after Mellis had crossed Magnay's header on. The
Italian's contact was not clean however and Miguel was able to clear it
off the line, or perhaps just behind it?
Borini (below) had sprung into life and turned onto a Matic-supplied ball
and hit a great effort that curled wide. Before that, Jay Thomas for
Arsenal had gone close.

Reserves 博里尼
Arsenal had been kept quiet compared with the early stages but went ahead
on 28 minutes with a goal that owed a great deal to Thomas, the tall
captain of their FA Youth Cup-winning side of last season. Collecting the
ball some way from the Chelsea area he powered forward, had too much
strength for the challenge of Liam Bridcutt and having drawn the defence,
slipped the ball sideways to Freeman to score.
The half ended with Miguel clearing the Chelsea bar after some
unconvincing set-piece defending, the problem not a first-team exclusive,
before Borini really should have equalised in stoppage time when Matic put
him through. The striker's lob didn't have the height to clear James Shea
in goal.
Gael Kakuta had been more or less anonymous in the first half and his
free-kick attempt straight after the restart was disappointing, but then
the Frenchman, playing as one of two behind Borini, won possession and
sent a ball through to the striker. Borini's touch wide gave an angle to
beat Shea but his shot hit the post and frustratingly came out.
It didn't get any better for Borini on 61 minutes when another pass from
the creative Matic gave him a chance. Doing well to burst beyond his
marker, the finish lacked composure and cleared the bar by some distance.
It took Rhys Taylor in the Chelsea goal to stretch and tip Emmanuel
Frimpong's bouncing shot over the bar on 68 minutes after sustained
Arsenal pressure.
The game went stagnant midway through the half, brightened only by a
Kakuta run past two down the flank that was halted for afoul when
advantage should have been played.
Then with 15 minutes to play, Thomas again had too much control and muscle
for the Chelsea rearguard, taking then on and evading Strickland's tackle
before squaring the ball. GillesSunu made it 2-0 via a deflection off
Magnay.
That looked to be that but within a minute the Blues pulled one back with
the Arsenal defence dozing.
Kakuta supplied the low cross from the left which was played on the edge
of the six-yard box by Borini for Matic to tap in. It was 2-1.
Within minutes there was a familiar story as Thomas beat Strickland and
this time drilled the ball across the face of the Chelsea goal,
fortunately a few inches ahead of Conor Henderson's slide at the far post.
With two minutes left on the clock, Kakuta was himself only inches from
rescuing a point, taking Borini's pass wide on the left and drilling a
shot from the edge of the area that only just missed the far post.
