YOUTH CUP REPORT: WATFORD 0 CHELSEA 4
Posted on: Wed 17 Feb 2010
Chelsea are through to the semi-finals of the FA Youth cup for the second
time in three years.
For the second time in this cup campaign the Under 18s scored four goals
without reply and as at Nottingham Forest in round four, this win and the
margin of victory was thoroughly merited.
The goals came from Aliu 'Kaby' Djalo, Marko Mitrovic (his fourth of the
cup run), Jeffrey Bruma and Josh McEachran.
Fit-again Bruma had been able to retake his place in central defence so
Aziz-Deen Conteh moved back to the left-back slot he occupied in the early
rounds.
Milan Lalkovic was also fit from the injury that kept him out of the win
against Portsmouth in the previous round and came in on the right of the
attack in place of Jacopo Sala. The Italian had an Achilles problem.
Chelsea started the game by showing some muscle. Centre-forward Mitrovic
burst through the challenge of Oshodi but crossed too strongly. Then
Lalkovic chased a good ball by McEachran but Watford left-back Theo Angus
defended well. From a seventh minute corner Mitrovic headed wide of the
near post.
However despite that good early showing it was Watford who came within a
whisker of scoring on 18 minutes. Billy Clifford had conceded a free-kick
on the Chelsea right and the ball in was headed just wide by centre-
forward Gavin Massey. The Hornets wouldn't go as close again.
Chelsea did have the ball in the net on 24 minutes but the goal was ruled
out in what would have been the game's big moment of controversy had the
result not gone our way. The move had started with a long ball from Conor
Clifford, a great pass to find Lalkovic in the clear. With space running
out, the Slovakian's cross was good and Mitrovic was there to control it
and turn it in from a couple of yards out. The linesman flagged for
handball. At most the ball could have bounced up to hit the Swede's elbow
but there was no move of the arm to control it.
It took only five minutes more for the young Blues to take the lead, Kaby
netting for the first time in the Youth Cup run (pictured above).
His was a great finish high into the net after working the ball onto his
left foot in a tight space. Gokhan Tore had tried to work space to cross
but when he couldn't play it in, Bruma picked up possession and played
onto to Mitrovic. The striker could have crossed himself had the ball not
escaped him. His Portuguese colleague from midfield didn't waste his
chance.

卡比怒射
Chelsea nearly went a long way to sealing the tie just two minutes later
when McEachran's strong run that was picked out by another Bruma ball
ended with a shot over with only the keeper to beat.
The visitors were now well on top. Lalkovic went close with an angled shot
deflected wide and then when Billy Clifford, up from right-back, tried his
luck from 35 yards, the keeper unconvincingly tipped it onto the roof of
the net.
On 39 minutes Tore whipped in another of his speciality left-wing crosses
and only the reflexes of Watford keeper Jonathan Bond kept it out when
Oshodi diverted it towards his own net.
Just before the break Lalkovic opted to cut inside as Billy Clifford
overlapped on the outside and curled a shot not too far over.
Watford, the team that had beaten Liverpool at Anfield in the previous
round, had, that one header wide apart, done little to trouble Dermot
Drummy's side in the opening 45 minutes.
Before the interval they suffered the blow of Chelsea going 2-0 up.
Mitrovic, having been fouled by Oshodi as the ball came in high their way,
got up and slotted the penalty accurately with the keeper wrong footed.
Chelsea, with no need to chase the game, played calmly at the start of the
second half. Conor Clifford let fly from distance but it looped off a
defender and wide.
The third goal came on the hour mark. It had been Billy Clifford that
played the ball forward for the penalty and now his supply was perfect for
the superbly-timed run of Bruma. Stepping to the side of the keeper, there
was never a doubt the Dutch Under 21 international would finish (below).
The centre-back had confidently been contributing the attacking play all
night long.

中後衛布魯馬反越位進球
Andy Yiadom was then booked for time-wasting. At 3-0 down, eating up the
minutes was an unlikely explanation for the Watford defender delaying his
throw-in. That was their second yellow card. Kurtney Brooks had his name
taken for almost removing Kaby's shorts. Sub Chris Isaac made it three
Hornets' yellows for an infringement in a defensive wall. Bruma went close
when that free kick was taken.
Chelsea had begun the chase for the fourth with Tore forcing a save from
Bond and Conor Clifford and Bruma shot too high with long-rangers.
Apart from one shot wide by the home side, the closing minutes passed
without concern for a Chelsea backline that had looked comfortable
throughout. Had Tore put more pace on a ball through to Lalkovic then it
would have been 4-0 before McEachran finished the scoring just before the
end.
It was Tore who created that opening, teasing the defence before finding
the 16-year-old at the far-post. McEachran demonstrated his outstanding
technique as he lashed a volley home.
'It was a great team performance,' said youth team manager Dermot Drummy.
'You have to remember Watford went to Anfield and won 1-0 and are a good
side but when we moved the ball quickly we were effective.
'There was a period when it was 3-0 when I thought we tried to play
schoolboy football but we rectified that and we ran out worthy winners.'
Chelsea will now play either Everton or Blackburn over two legs, the
second leg at Stamford Bridge. The dates are yet to be set.
