In freezing conditions at Cobham, the youth team controlled much of the game as the first half swung in the Blues' favour. Kenny Strickland captained the side from his holding position in midfield, while Anton Rodgers headed up the diamond. Marko Mitrovic and Bobby Devyne (pictured) led the attack, helped by an adventurous Aziz Deen-Conteh at left-back. In fact, it was Conteh who won the corner which created Chelsea's first chance on goal only four minutes in. Rodgers delivered the set piece, curling the ball towards the near post where Mitrovic headed into the Norwich keeper's arms. It was the first of three chances inside the initial 10 minutes as Chelsea began to dominate the visitors, despite playing their third game in a week. The second chance also fell to Mitrovic, as he lifted his leg high to connect with a Nikki Ahamed cross, kicking the ball into the keeper's grasp. The third came when Deen-Conteh stole possession on the halfway line before breaking down the left flank. He then crossed to Rodgers whose shot from the edge of the box skimmed the bar. It would take until the half-hour mark for Chelsea to take the lead. A beautiful through ball from Strickland found Devyne after the striker's lightening pace saw him break past the back line. Devyne's first touch was sublime and his second saw him tap the ball in at the far post, giving Chelsea a well-deserved lead. Norwich came out with renewed vigour in the second half, forcing the Chelsea defence into action. Despite the pressure, an organised display kept Norwich from scoring as they had a goal disallowed for offside. It took until 10 minutes from full time for the visitors to find the net when an open Sam Kelly leapt high to connect head-first with a long ball from the left flank. He neatly headed beyond the line at the far post. The Blues immediately retaliated, with some clever, two-touch football building towards the Norwich box but it took until the final minute for Chelsea to retake the lead. Conteh, who'd proved troublesome throughout the fixture, sent a dangerous cross towards Devyne in the box. Under pressure and afraid the ball would reach our target man, the Norwich defence kicked the ball into their own net. Overall it was a resilient display from Chelsea, who represented the club in the FA Youth Cup midweek, and a well-worked win. 'We're really pleased because even though some of the lads were getting tired in the second half, they didn't give up,' said youth team manager Dermot Drummy after the game. 'We proved our character today under difficult conditions and against a very physical Norwich side. A well deserved win,' added Drummy.
