The youth side dominated much of the fixture and built a comfortable lead in the first half before a freak goal from the visitors put them back into contention. The last time these two teams met, Southampton, who boast a well-built side, secured a 4-3 victory at home. This time, intent on not repeating the result, Chelsea threatened from the off. First Gokhan Tore had a freekick headed away from danger before the Turkish international danced his way into the box before having his shot saved. Captain Conor Clifford then sent a curling freekick skimming inches past the post and Chelsea goalkeeper Sam Walker made a fantastic save to keep the scores level. But with 27 minutes played, Jacopo Sala (pictured) struck, sending a low, left-footed drive across the face of goal and inside the far post from the edge of the box. Confident after scoring the opener, Sala would have one more chance on goal before Chelsea made it two. This time it was Milan Lalkovic who netted in the far corner. Following some clever play from the Blues, Lalkovic drilled a shot into the net from an acute angle on the left flank. But seconds after the restart a Rohan Ince back pass was nearly intercepted by Southampton's Sam Hoskins, forcing Walker to panic and scuff the ball into his own net. At half time youth team manager Dermot Drummy made three changes. Aldi Haxhia came on for Walker between the posts while Bobby Devyne replaced Marko Mitrovic up front. In midfield Conor Clifford, who played a full 90 minutes for Ireland U21s in the week, made way for Anton Rodgers. Kabi Djalo, who had already received a yellow card for dissent, took the captain's armband. Ray Wilkins and Paul Clement also made their way to the sidelines at half time, after taking a first-team training session, from where they watched the game. Unfortunately the next goal they would see came from the visitors. The final goal of the game was the result of bad defending when Callum McNish was able to dance his way through our back line. He then hit a crisp shot past an stretching Haxhia, who could only watch as the ball hit the net. Chelsea continued to control the game though and Sala was proving troublesome down the right side, sending in cross after cross with no end product. Devyne had a shot scream inches over the bar before Haxhia pulled off two fantastic saves in quick succession, helping secure Chelsea a point from the fixture. Milan Lalkovic had a goal disallowed for offside before the referee blew for full time. Overall it was a good display from a Chelsea side who never gave up, despite being far smaller in size than the opposition. 'Southampton are a very strong, physical side,' said Drummy after the game. It's a shame we lost the two-goal lead but I am pleased with the result. 'Sala was fantastic and Ben Sampayo put in a good performance at left-back, somewhere he doesn't normally play. So we're pleased with today's performance.'
