http://www.chelseafc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10268~2005307,00.html THE YOUNG GENERATION Posted on: Thu 25 Mar 2010 It has been a week of encouraging news inside the Chelsea Academy. One Youth Cup Final, one debutant, one returning defender, one departing on loan and one exciting trip ahead... Not only did we reach another FA Youth Cup Final with a free-flowing display at Stamford Bridge, but at reserve team level there was the much anticipated return to action of highly rated defender Sam Hutchinson, and a first team debut for left-back Patrick van Aanholt. Meanwhile Ben Gordon has joined Tranmere Rovers on loan until April 24, his first temporary move since arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2007. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/6b/b4/0,,10268~8696939,00.jpg
Ben Gordon - Tranmere loan Dutchman Van Aanholt, 19, came on as a second-half sub in the 5-0 win at Portsmouth on Wednesday night, and was understandably delighted to have made his bow. 'I am buzzing, I had a great night last night and I was really happy to make my debut,' he said this morning. 'I am trying to get more involved in the first team and hope to be able to play a couple more times before the end of the season as well. 'I had a fantastic month on loan at Newcastle, played seven games, and in front of more than 50,000 people, so it was a great experience for me. In the reserves you are only in front of a few hundred, but then I went to Coventry and played in front of 30,000, then Newcastle 52,000, it's a massive difference, unbelievable. I really enjoyed my time there and now I hope I can push on some more.' 'Hutch', meanwhile, played the first 45 minutes of the second string's 2-1 defeat against Fulham on Tuesday, and reported no pain in his troublesome knee afterwards. Back in training with the first team, he will also be hoping to make an impact on Carlo Ancelotti in the weeks ahead. Fresh from qualifying for a second FA Youth Cup Final in three seasons, the Academy squad flies out to Texas on Friday morning to take part in the Dallas Cup, a prestigious youth tournament well established over the last 30 years. It is a tournament in which we have participated before, and the 10-day trip allows the boys to sample a number of aspects of professional football at elite levels - travel, hotel accommodation and an intense schedule with a minimum of five games. It also allows a number of younger players to ingratiate themselves within the group. 'It's nice to see another part of the world, and you learn about the lads and they learn a little bit too,' says coach Dermot Drummy. 'We're taking some younger lads over because of players going out on loan and a couple of injuries, so Conor Clifford won't go, he is injured, we have some senior players and some intermediates, with three Under 16s - Todd Kane, Danny Stenning and Archange Nkumu. 'It's nice for them to see the next level up and I think the games programme is quite busy, but mentally it's a nice break to get away from Cobham, let the boys have a swim, go to a rodeo, visit a children's hospital, see an NBA game and do some shopping. 'It's part of a footballer's life to see parts of the world and be in and out of hotels, and it's a big experience for them. We'll be very big on how they conduct themselves with the club badge on, you have to be in hotels representing Chelsea and it's a long time away - there will be times when they are a bit bored, so we have to see how they handle that.' http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/e0/9c/0,,10268~8690912,00.jpg
Sala cheers Despite forthcoming league fixtures, and a two-legged Cup Final to come, it is an intense period for the lads with fierce competition expected. 'Five games is a lot, and there will be some sides who play totally different football,' Drummy explained, referring to our opposition - FC Dallas, Liga Deportiva Alajuelense and FC Monterrey Rayados. 'It's an Under 19 tournament so that's tough, and the expectancy really is just to see how they perform mentally and whatever we get out of it in terms of results will be a bonus.' As for the Youth Cup, our opponents will be either Aston Villa or Newcastle United, who are still to play their first leg of the semi. They meet at Villa Park on April 8, and St James's Park eight days later.
