LOAN INTEREST
Posted on: Tue 06 Apr 2010
There are half a dozen young Chelsea players currently out on loan. Here
we catch up with their movements over the past six weeks.
In Holland, Miroslav Stoch, Steve McClaren and FC Twente continue to top
the Eredivisie with just four games remaining.
They have worked up a four-point gap between themselves and title rivals
Ajax, with PSV Eindhoven a further point behind.
The Enschede side have still lost just one league game this season,
against Ajax in early February, and Stoch has been a revelation,
contributing eight goals in his 27 league starts and one sub appearance,
which came this weekend after the Slovakian had sat out the previous
weekend's game with a thigh injury.
In Europe, Twente were eliminated from the Europa League at the first
knockout stage, a hat-trick from former Blue Claudio Pizarro doing the
damage for Werder Bremen, though Stoch ended the campaign with two goals
from seven appearances.
Back in England, Jack Cork has been finding life hard in the Premier
League with Burnley, picking up just one point from his six appearances
for the Clarets. That came in a 1-1 home draw against Stoke City in early
March, in which the midfielder was substituted at half-time with ankle and
thigh problems.
He returned to the side for the second half against Manchester City on
Saturday, and with his side already 5-0 down, the 1-1 draw in the second
half suggests his presence in front of the defence proved something of a
success.
Next up for the Clarets is a trip to Hull on Saturday, in a huge
relegation match.
Scott Sinclair's only Wigan appearance since our last update came on
Saturday during their 2-1 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage - the 20-year-
old was an 85th minute substitute as the Latics unsuccessfully tried to
earn a late point.
By appearing as a late sub in Blackburn's 1-0 win at Burnley last weekend,
Franco Di Santo played in his 23rd Rovers game of the season, his only
goal being against the Clarets in the reverse fixture at Ewood Park.

Mancienne - Chelsea - on loan at Wolves
Finally in the Premier League is Michael Mancienne, who has appeared in 26
of Wolves' 33 matches, 18 as a starter.
The 22-year-old played 90 minutes against Arsenal on Saturday, and
impressed in his role in front of the defence, a clean sheet only evading
them in injury time. It also seems as though Mancienne has added a bite to
his game in recent weeks, having picked up four yellow cards in his last
six games - the 23 before it in all competitions had only provided two
cautions.
Ryan Bertrand scored his first goal in senior football for Reading last
month, dedicating the goal in their 4-1 win over Derby County to his mum!
'It's my mum's birthday, she was here so she will be delighted,' he said.
'I pointed to the stands but I didn't know where she was sitting. That was
for her though!'
Even more surprising than Bertrand hitting the net was that it was with
his right foot, past Derby captain and midfielder Robbie Savage, who had
taken over in goal.
The 20-year-old left-back has been a key figure as Reading have recovered
from their early season poor form, and a play-off position is not yet out
of the question. Bertrand has started 38 of the Royals' 40 league games,
and has been voted the most popular loan player at the Madejski Stadium by
Reading supporters.
Finally, Ben Gordon last month joined Tranmere Rovers on a one-month deal,
a first spell away from Chelsea for the 19-year-old left-back.
A 3-0 defeat on his league debut at Brighton was followed up by a 3-1 win
over promotion hopefuls Norwich, and then disaster struck as the Bradford-
born man netted an own goal to give Swindon the lead on Saturday, the
Robins eventually winning 3-0 at the County Ground.
Ben's deal lasts until April 24, while the other lads away on loan are all
at their respective clubs until the end of the season.
