Anelka started the game but was withdrawn before the end after cutting a frustrated figure in attack, while Malouda was surprisingly left on the bench until the final quarter-hour. Malouda's exclusion was the shock news before the game, after an apparent fall-out with controversial coach Raymond Domenech, and so Arsenal's Abou Diaby started in a midfield three instead, Anelka the lone forward with Franck Ribery and Sidney Govou either side. It was Govou that should have opened the scoring after just six minutes when Ribery squared across the Uruguay six-yard box, but the Lyon forward tapped wide when the goal looked unmissable. Uruguay forward, ex-Manchester United man Diego Forlan, forced a smart save from French stopper Hugo Lloris at the other end before Yoann Gourcuff, who played against Chelsea during 2008/09 for Bordeaux, went close with a curling free-kick. Four minutes before half-time the Chelsea forward got across his man inside the area, but glanced his header just wide after Govou had crossed from the right. On the hour, a cross from the other flank by Ribery picked Anelka out, but it was slightly too high and he could only divert it over. That was to be Anelka's last major input, and he was replaced with 19 minutes remaining by Thierry Henry. Moments later Forlan could have won it for the Uruguayans but snatched at his shot, and then it was time for Malouda to enter the action, 16 minutes from time, surprising given his excellent form this season and the uninspiring display from those around him. The wide man did manage to flash a shot across goal, but could make no major difference on a disappointing night for the French. Before the end, Uruguay sub Nicolas Lodeiro was dismissed for a second yellow after a heavy challenge on Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna, meaning he will be suspended for Uruguay's next match. Earlier in the day hosts South Africa kicked off the tournament against Mexico in an entertaining 1-1 draw. With the hopes of a continent behind them, the Bafana Bafana survived early pressure to take a second-half lead when forward Siphiwe Tshabalala raced through and smashed into the top corner. The vuvuzelas, those small plastic horns that accompany football games in this part of the world, could no doubt he heard for miles around, but they were silenced with a little over 10 minutes remaining when Barcelona's Rafael Marquez fired home the equaliser from close range. South Africa could have won it in the 90th minute after another rapid back-to-front break, but Katlego Mphela's close-range effort came back off the outside of the post. The 94,000 inside the Soccer City stadium may have been disappointed with the result, but if those excitement levels are maintained throughout the tournament, and the disappointing French game is a one-off, then this could just be the best for some time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2069744,00.html THREE BLUES FOR THREE LIONS BUT ALL-SQUARE WITH THE STATES Posted on: Sat 12 Jun 2010 John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, as expected, played the full 90 minutes of England's opening World Cup match. In a 4-4-2 selection, Lampard was paired in the middle with Steven Gerrard who scored in a 1-1 draw against the USA. That was the opener and it came inside four minutes but it did not set England on their way as it should have done. Despite looking the more dangerous side, it was a performance that left hanging many of the question marks over the side's chances that were there prior to this tournament. Not least is the quality of the goalkeeping with West Ham's Rob Green conceding a horror equaliser six minutes before half time when he failed to stop a routine straight shot. The scorer was Fulham's Clint Dempsey who has caused pain for Chelsea in the past. Another question mark has been the fitness of whoever partners Terry in central defence and Ledley King was replaced at half time by Jamie Carragher, and then there is the centre-forward position and although Emile Heskey's link-up play against the States was good, he struck the best scoring chance of the game straight at keeper Tim Howard. Terry's performance was pretty much impeccable and Ashley Cole was defensively sound, if a little reserved in pushing forward against Landon Donovan. When Cole did attack with menace into the area shortly before the interval, his cross was blocked. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/87/e5/0,,10268~8840583,00.jpg
Terry Lampard, with plenty of defensive duties too, had few chances to score but he did work Howard just past the hour. His left-foot shot was tipped over, and after later striking a free-kick too high, was challenged well in front of goal when taking a return from Aaron Lennon with time running out. Lennon was on the right of midfield and Joe Cole missed out on selection on the left to James Milner. When the Aston Villa man was taken off before half-an-hour was up, Cole was passed over as substitute in favour of Shaun Wright-Phillips. Not on his favoured right side, the former Chelsea winger did not impress. England failed to create much in the first half following the early goal which came about when Lampard took a Glen Johnson throw and his pass found its way to Heskey. Turned into Gerrard's path, it was good finish from England's latest captain. The United States caused some concern with aerial crosses into the England area and for Fabio Capello's side, Johnson almost hit back straight after the equaliser, but the bulk of the opportunities were second half. Green did well to turn a shot from former Hull striker Jozy Altidore onto the post, Wright-Phillips made it easy for Howard when well-placed, and Heskey headed his second chance over. Wayne Rooney finished the game strongly and England will take some comfort from the quality of some parts of their game although they picked up bookings for Milner, Carragher and Gerrard. It was a familiar stuttering start to an England World Cup campaign. In Saturday's other matches, Argentina began their group stage with a performance more convincing than their result, a 1-0 win over John Mikel Obi-less Nigeria. With Lionel Messi living up to his billing, it took a string of quick- reaction saves from the Super Eagles' keeper Vincent Enyeama to prevent the South Americans adding to a sixth-minute headed goal from Gabriele Heinze. Greece, who have yet to earn a point or even score a goal in World Cup Finals, became the first team to suffer defeat in this year's tournament when they were beaten 2-0 by South Korea in the day's first game. Lee Jung-Soo scored after just seven minutes and Man United's Park Ji-Sung made it 2-0 the same number of minutes after half-time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2069947,00.html GHANA SILENCE IVANOVIC`S SERBIA Posted on: Sun 13 Jun 2010 Branislav Ivanovic was the only Chelsea representative in today's World Cup action, playing the entire 90 minutes in Serbia's 1-0 defeat to Ghana. It took 83 minutes for the goal to arrive in this Group D clash, when Zdravko Kuzmanovic handled in the Serbian box and Asamoah Gyan struck from the spot. Serbia, who were down to 10 men, then failed to close the deficit. It was a tight game, with few chances overall, but one which Ghana looked the slightly better side. However, it did start with opportunities at both ends when, only a minute in, Serbia's Marko Pantelic hammered a right-footed, 40-yard strike narrowly wide. A minute later Anthony Annon, playing in central midfield for Ghana, shot from 25 yards to miss at the other end. Gyan then had a good chance of scoring the opener with a freekick from 20 yards out but the ball curled up and over the bar. Things settled down after the fiery start but the crowd continued their support as the sounds of horns were heard clearly throughout. Ghana were looking the slightly stronger side and when, with 20 minutes played, Serbia's Nikola Zigic was forced into obstructing Dede Ayew to prevent an attack, he was duly shown the yellow card. Zigic was then fouled by Isaac Vorsah six minutes later, which earned the Ghanaian the second yellow of the game. A tense first half ensued, with an Aleksandar Kolarov freekick, which curled inches past the top right, being the best chance before half time arrived. The second half began with more attacking football, as both sides created chances, the best coming from a Prince Tagoe cross which was headed wide by Ayew for Ghana. But like the first half, chances dried out as the majority of play took place in the centre of the pitch. The tournament's third red was shown in the 74th minute when Aleksandar Lukovic was shown his second yellow for pulling Asamoah Gyan's arm back once the Ghanaian had broken past him. Ivanovic, who had been performing his duties well throughout the game, then produced a fabulous break down the right flank before launching a shot from 25 yards out, the chance was close but rose a little too far and flew over the bar. A minute later, Ghana were awarded a penalty. Just after Serbia had begun turning the tide against their opposition, a cross into the Serbian area was handled by Kuzmanovic. He was booked for the offence and Gyan stepped up to send Vladimir Stojkovic the wrong way and net for Ghana. Serbia tried to pull a goal back before Prince Tagoe was shown yellow for handling the ball. After three minutes of stoppage time the game ended 1-0 in Ghana's favour and that's three points in Group D. In the first match of the day, Slovenia went top of Group C with a narrow 1-0 win over 10-man Algeria, after Abdelkader Ghezzal was dismissed following a blatant handball and second yellow. Slovenia now lead the group by two points after the 1-1 draw between England and USA yesterday evening. In the day's final game, Germany put the loss of Michael Ballack and a number of other significant figures behind them with an excellent display against Australia. After surviving an early Tim Cahill header, the Germans went ahead through Lukas Podolski who finished powerfully after Thomas Mueller had cut the ball back from the bye-line, and they soon doubled the lead when Miroslav Klose headed home from a curling Phillip Lahm cross. A harsh red card for Cahill just before the hour meant Germany had an extra man, but they had already played with superiority over their ageing opponents and it was no surprise to see them add more. Mueller twisted and turned in the area before sending a low shot in off the post to make it three, and then substitute Cacau slotted home after the exciting Mesut Ozil had squared. That means the Germans are in control of Group D, while Serbia will probably need to win their next two games to progress after the disappointment of their Ghana defeat. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2071512,00.html CHELSEA FIVE DRAW BLANKS Posted on: Tue 15 Jun 2010 It was a case of three playing two as far as Chelsea were concerned, but there were no goals as Portugal and Ivory Coast drew 0-0 in their World Cup opener. In a game of few chances it was the defensive pair of Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira that will be most pleased with their day's work, the more creative forces of Deco and Salomon Kalou largely stifled , while forward Didier Drogba began the game on the bench, but did play 25 minutes and could have won the game late on for his country. Kalou started on Ivory Coast's left wing and the Portuguese trio of Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira and Deco all in from the off, Ferreira charged with marking his Chelsea colleague. It began in lively fashion, Didier Zokora booked for a foul on Cristiano Ronaldo, and Carvalho jumping highest to meet a Deco corner, though no danger came of it. A moment later Ronaldo beat two men and then let fly from 30 yards, his drive coming back off the post as Portugal had the better of the early exchanges. Ivory Coast were competitive though and Gervinho caught a sight of goal after 23 minutes as he got the better of Carvalho and Pedro Mendes (formerly of Spurs) before Ferreira covered well with a tidy challenge. Carvalho made amends three minutes later with a well-timed lunge on the same player inside the area. Into the second half Kalou and Ferreira were involved in a tangle inside the Portugal area, the younger man going down after a tug from the Portuguese, but the referee saw nothing in it, and there was little complaint from either party. Within five minutes Carvalho had to whip the ball away from Kalou inside the Portugal area as Ivory Coast threatened, and then the wide man curled straight at Eduardo after receiving a square pass. Things were just starting to warm up, and Drogba could also be seen warming up along the touchline., raising the noise levels in Port Elizabeth even further beyond the customary vuvuzela din. Deco's afternoon was completed on 61 minutes when he was replaced in midfield by former Chelsea man Tiago, and four minutes later it was Kalou's turn to be withdrawn. In his place came Drogba, the man the whole of Africa had been waiting for, though his impact on the game was minimal as the rain poured down. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/58/f6/0,,10268~8844888,00.jpg
Chelsea men Drogba and Carvalho come together Raul Meireles shot just wide for Portugal from distance, before Drogba's only chance. Sub Kader Keita slipped him through, but with the goalkeeper and Ferreira closing him down, he could only poke his shot across goal and away to safety. Moments later Keita had a chance of his own but shot straight into Carvalho's chest, and that was it, not a result either side had hoped for but one that is by no means a disaster. Next up for Ivory Coast is Brazil on Sunday, while Portugal will meet North Korea on Monday, After the evidence of Tuesday night, neither will have it easy. Brazil ran out 2-1 winners against their unknown opponents, but not without a fight. Inter right-back Maicon broke the deadlock in the second half before Elano, formerly of Manchester City, finished Robinho's excellent through ball. The Koreans did not give up though and continued to work their more illustrious foes, and were rewarded on 89 minutes when Ji Yun Nam burst through and fired past Julio Cesar. Earlier in the day Slovakia and New Zealand, two sides unfamiliar to the World Cup, drew 1-1 in Rustenburg. After a drab first half Robert Vittek headed the Europeans ahead, possibly from an offside position, before the All Whites levelled in injury-time through a Winston Reid header, also, possibly, offside. Miroslav Stoch, who has just departed Chelsea for Fenerbahc,e, was an 84th minute sub for Slovakia, a slight knee injury preventing him from a start, and he watched on in horror as Shane Smeltz crossed and former Denmark Under 21 defender Reid headed home to ensure things in Group F are all square after Italy and Paraguay's 1-1 draw on Monday evening.
