The 1998 tournament winners have just one point and no goals after two games and now have their destiny out of their hands following a deserved 2-0 defeat. A variety of stories exist on the relationship between Florent Malouda and Raymond Domenech over the past week but whatever the truth, the coach restored the Chelsea player to his starting line-up for this game with Bordeaux's Yoann Gourcuff making way. Nicolas Anelka retained his place but did not make it as far as the second half. The striker was taken off after 45 minutes in which he didn't threaten the goal. Malouda added some zest to Les Bleus' advances early on and took the attacking free-kicks. The game started with a good tempo and there was brightness about the French but when a goal didn't come, ideas and belief drained away. Mexico always looked capable of inflicting damage on the break and Giovanni Dos Santos hit a post, albeit from an offside position, and both Arsenal's Carlos Vela and former West Ham player Guillermo Franco blasted wide. Malouda kept going under a strong challenge in the area but pulled the ball across and out of the reach of Franck Ribery. The Chelsea wideman was increasingly well-policed by his opponents and found space to create hard to find. France were fortunate not to concede when Pablo Barrera reached a cross ahead of keeper Hugo Lloris who had come to punch before Anelka at last had the chance to hit the target as France broke well. He struck his shot straight at the keeper. There was then a sight rarely glimpsed at Stamford Bridge as Anelka took a direct free-kick but he fired it into the wall shortly before his half-time withdrawal. His replacement, Toulouse's Andre-Pierre Gignac, who has a good scoring record against the Faroe Islands, fared no better. Thierry Henry remained on the bench. Malouda was pushed in the back by Efrain Juarez shortly after the restart, earning the Mexican a booking, before the Chelsea man went closest to scoring of any Frenchman when his right-foot drive was tipped over. While Ribery and co. continued to run down blind alleys, Mexico went ahead, substitute Javier Hernandez the scorer on 63 minutes when the Man United-bound striker sprung the offside trap. Malouda did find Gignac for a shot from a difficult position but it was blazed well off target and when Barcelona's Eric Abidal conceded a 77th minute penalty with a tackle on Barrera that lacked care, converted by veteran Cuauhtemoc Blanco, there was no way back. It was the Mexicans' first victory over France who now must beat South Africa and hope Uruguay and Mexico do not draw. If Wednesday's action had suggested the World Cup is starting to come to life, the early games on Thursday certainly confirmed it. First, Argentina hammered South Korea 4-1 at Soccer City thanks to a Gonzalo Higuain hat-trick, and then Greece scraped past Nigeria in Bloemfontein after coming from behind. Diego Maradona's Argentina have now all but booked their place in the last 16 after a second enterprising display in as many games. An own goal from Korean forward Lee Chung-Yong set the ball rolling for the Alibiceleste after Lionel Messi had delivered a dangerous free-kick into the penalty area, and then Maxi Rodriguez's cross was eventually headed in by Real Madrid forward Higuain after Nicolas Burdisso had flicked on. Korea, semi-finalists under Guus Hiddink in 2002, threatened to get back into the game and reduced the deficit through Lee, who stole possession from Martin Demichelis and finished nicely. Higuian forced a superb save from Jung Sung-Ryong at close range before Yeom Ki-Hun wasted a golden chance to level when one-on-one, he shot into the side netting. From there Argentina grew in strength, and the brilliant Messi came to life, his shot rebounding off the post for Higuian to tap in, and then his exquisite chip found sub Sergio Aguero (who scored twice against Chelsea for Atletico Madrid last season) to cross for Higuian, the forward nodding home at the far post to complete the scoring, and claim the first World Cup hat-trick since 2002. In the day's second game, Nigeria and Greece were competing for a chance to finish second in Group B behind the superb Argentines, and it was the former European champions who came out on top. Nigeria, without John Mikel Obi for this tournament, took the lead when a Kalu Uche free-kick evaded everyone in the area and bounced past Greek goalkeeper Alexandros Tsorvas and into the net. Greece, who had never scored in a World Cup Finals before, let alone won a game, did not look like breaking that duck but were dealt a huge slice of luck when Nigeria's Sanu Keita kicked out at Vasilis Torosidis, earning himself a red card. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/84/7/0,,10268~8849284,00.jpg
World Cup Suddenly the game changed and although poor in attack, Greece were fortunate once more when Dimitris Salpingidis shot at goal, and his effort deflected off defender Haruna Lukman and into the far corner. Into the second half Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama made a superb save from Fanis Gekas, and then Nigeria broke to the other end and should have scored themselves, though first Everton's Yakubu shot straight at the Greek keeper, and then Chinedu Obasi sent his rebound weakly wide of the gaping goal. Enyeama made one more standout save before his day took a turn for the worse, spilling a shot, possibly unsighted, from Alexandros Tziolis, allowing Torosidis to nip in and poke it home. It was not a game of high quality, but Greece's German coach Otto Rehhagel will not mind as it leaves them with a chance of progressing to the last 16. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2074076,00.html IVANOVIC HOPES REIGNITED Posted on: Fri 18 Jun 2010 Branislav Ivanovic recorded his first three World Cup points as Serbia secured a tight 1-0 win over Germany in Port Elizabeth on Friday. In an encounter that boasted a number of chances for either side, it was Raddy Antic's team that just about came on top, and the Chelsea defender played his part in a valuable clean sheet. Despite suspension to centre-back Aleksandar Lukovic, Ivanovic continued at right-back against the Germans, who had started the tournament so well against Australia last weekend. Twice in the early stages he looked to attack, and twice he was felled by forward Miroslav Klose who was yellow-carded. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/79/c/0,,10268~8850553,00.jpg
Ivanovic goes down under a challenge from Klose It would not be long before the defender saw yellow himself, upending Lukas Podolski after 18 minutes. It was the type of challenge referees in the English league may tolerate, but not here on the world stage where contact often brings a caution. On the half-hour, our man played a good offside to trap Klose, who went through and put the ball in the net, and then made an important aerial challenge on the forward to keep the scores goalless. Aleksandar Kolarov sent a free-kick just wide for the Serbs, before Klose saw a second yellow for a mistimed challenge on Inter's Dejan Stankovic. Less than two minutes later Serbia took the lead, a deep cross from Milos Krasic picking out the head of Nikola Zigic, now a Birmingham player, and he nodded down for Milan Jovanovic, rumoured to be joining Liverpool, to smash home from close range. Having lost out to Ghana at the weekend after being reduced to 10 men, the Serbs had now benefited. Germany rallied and Sami Khedira lashed against the crossbar before half-time, before Bastian Schweinsteiger worked Vladimir Stojkovic and Podolski twice shot wide after the break. Then, on 59 minutes, Serbia gave away their second inexplicable penalty in as many games. This time the culprit was Man United centre-back Nemanja Vidic, who handled Podolski's deep cross with no attacker near him. Podolski stepped up, and Stojkovic saved low to his left. It might mainly have been down to refereeing decisions, but this was a very entertaining game, and despite the miss could still go either way. Up the other end Jovanovic curled against the post after Krasic had done well, and then Zigic headed against the woodwork but there would be no more goals. So it is a welcome clean sheet and an even more welcome three points for Ivanovic and Serbia, who will face Australia in their final group game with everything to play for. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2074358,00.html ENGLAND TRIO`S SLOW START CONTINUES Posted on: Fri 18 Jun 2010 Three Chelsea players took part in a tense World Cup encounter between England and Algeria which ended goalless tonight. John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole were all selected by Fabio Capello for England's second Group C Game. The Italian also picked David James over Robert Green in goal while Gareth Barry returned to midfield. It was a difficult first half for England as they struggled to create decent chances on goal. Cole was the first of the Chelsea trio to produce a threatening move when, with only six minutes gone, Steven Gerrard picked out his run down the left flank. Possession was snatched from the left-back before he had a chance to shoot but England had shown their intent. It was a slow start from both sides before England had a scare when James fumbled a shot and Glen Johnson failed to clear the slip. Fortunately for England Algeria didn't take advantage of the mistake before it was cleared from danger. Terry took a knock to the head and received treatment just before the half hour mark but was soon back in the centre of defence alongside Jamie Carragher. England's back four managed to diffuse Algeria's chances while offensive players struggled to create, but minutes after Terry's bump Gerrard forced a quick-witted save from Rais M'Bohli when he struck from 25 yards out. Lampard soon tested M'Bohli further after Heskey nodded down for the number 8 to control on his chest and strike towards the bottom corner. But despite these opportunities, England lacked consistency up front and their next chance came when Gareth Barry struck from long range into M'Bohli's arms. Then Wayne Rooney shot comfortably into M'Bohli's grasp from 25 yards. The first-half ended 0-0 without either side truly threatening their opponent's goal; although much of the play had taken place in Algeria's half, possession had been evenly shared. There were no changes at half-time and the second period of play began much like the first had finished. Lampard and Gerrard teamed up well to worry Algeria 10 minutes into the half when they broke into the box, but after Lampard released the England captain on the right side of the area, Gerrard's attempted pull-back for Heskey was hooked away from danger before a shot was launched. Soon after Carragher was shown his second yellow of the tournament for blocking Hassan Yebda, it means he'll miss England's final group game against Slovenia. Capello changed Aaron Lennon for former Blue Shaun Wright-Phillips on the hour mark in a straight swap on right wing and England threatened twice more as Rooney struck inches wide while Gerrard headed into M'Bohli's hands, before Heskey was replaced by Jermaine Defoe. An uneventful game continued and apart from a long-range Lampard effort three minutes from time, neither side created any real threat on goal. The fixture ended goalless with a point apiece, meaning England and USA have two points each in Group C while Slovenia lead with four. In Group C's other game, USA came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Slovenia, and could even have won it but for a controversially disallowed goal. Valter Birsa gave the Europeans the lead after 13 minutes with a fine strike from outside the area, beating Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard with a superb curler, and Zlatan Ljubijankic doubled the lead just before half-time slotting low past the goalkeeper after Milivoje Novakovic has threaded him through. At the other end Jose Torres forced Samir Handanovic into a fine save at his near-post with a curling free-kick, but it remained 2-0 at half-time. Landon Donovan halved the deficit two minutes into the second half when he smashed high into the net from close range, and then Handanovic had to save from Jozy Altidore with 20 minutes remaining. Ten minutes later though the forward, who spent last season on loan with Hull, nodded down and the coach's son, Michael Bradley, burst through and poked it into the roof of the net. Into the last five minutes Maurice Edu thought he had won it for the States, but it was ruled out for a foul that only the referee seemed to see. Slovenia had one more chance at the other end before the final whistle but Howard saved well, leaving his side with two points from as many games. After their win over Algeria, are well-placed to go through, but meet England in their final group game, while America face what is on paper an easier task against the Algerians. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2074586,00.html ANELKA HEADING HOME Posted on: Sat 19 Jun 2010 Nicolas Anelka will depart South Africa this evening, leaving Florent Malouda as the only Chelsea man in the France squad at the World Cup. The forward was substituted at half-time in his country's 2-0 defeat to Mexico on Thursday, following a dispute with team coach Raymond Domenech. After discussions between the coach, player, and the French Football Federation delegation, it was agreed that the forward would return home. 'He will leave the Team France camp this evening,' said a statement on www.fff.fr, the Federation's official website. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2074950,00.html DROGBA NETS BUT BRAZIL TRIUMPH Posted on: Sun 20 Jun 2010 A Didier Drogba header could not prevent Ivory Coast losing 3-1 to Brazil at the World Cup on Sunday evening. The Chelsea forward headed home with just over 10 minutes remaining in Johannesburg, by which time the Brazilians were already three goals up through a double from Luis Fabiano and Elano. Salomon Kalou was also a starter for the Ivorians, but was withdrawn from his left-wing role with just over 20 minutes remaining. After 24 minutes as a substitute against Portugal last week, Drogba was deemed fit to start against the Brazilians by coach Sven Goran Eriksson. It was Brazil who threatened first, when inside the opening minute, Robinho, still registered with Manchester City, burst forward and shot a yard over the crossbar. Despite their reputation as Africa's pre-eminent side, Brazil would be a tall order for Les Elephants and nobody faced a harder task than Drogba, who was marked by Inter's defensive man-mountain Lucio. After firing a speculative free-kick deep into the stand behind the goal, Drogba managed to draw a foul from his marker down the left channel, though the cross eventually came to nothing. Though Ivory Coast had their fair share of possession in the middle of the park, Brazil were beginning to profit down the flanks, as twice Maicon earned corners as he burst down the right, Kalou given the thankless task of pursuing him. With 25 minutes gone Brazil's attacking pair of Kaka and Luis Fabiano could boast no major action, but then they showed just why they are so highly-rated, in an instant exchanging passes and putting their country in front. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/51/17/0,,10268~8853329,00.jpg
Kalou challenges Julio Cesar of Brazil Kaka slipped the ball through the Ivory Coast backline and Fabiano, who had not scored in nine international months beforehand, smashed home from an acute angle past Boubacar Barry. It could have got worse for the Africans shortly afterwards, but Drogba rose high to head Elano's cross away. His aerial abilities so often demonstrated at Stamford Bridge transferred effectively to South Africa. His impact was now needed at the other end though, but Ivory Coast were struggling to gain ground, Kalou and Aruna Dindane on the other flank finding space hard to come by, and the midfield trio of Yaya Toure, Ismael Tiote and Didier Zokora lacking craft. Five minutes into the second half, Fabiano doubled the advantage with a fine solo goal, flicking the ball over three Ivorian defenders and lashing low into the bottom corner, a sucker blow. Drogba had his first decent sight of goal three minutes later, a deep cross reaching him at the far post but his header lacked precision and fell wide. At the other end Barry saved from Robinho before Elano made the three points safe for the Brazilians, slotting home just after the hour following Kaka's square ball into space. Kalou was withdrawn with a quarter of the game to go, and 10 minutes later, Drogba had his goal. Sub Gervinho found space down the left and picked out Yaya Toure, whose cross found the forward's run into the area, Drogba making no mistake and flicking it low into the corner. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/52/17/0,,10268~8853330,00.jpg
Kaka protests his innocence to Drogba The game threatened to descend into farce when sub Kader Keita reacted after a collision with Kaka, the Brazilian unjustly given a second yellow card, that will see him miss their final game with Portugal in the week. There was no further action though, and so despite Drogba's first goal of the 2010 World Cup, Ivory Coast will now be outsiders to progress into the last 16 should Portugal beat North Korea on Monday. Earlier in the day, Paraguay beat Slovakia in Group F at lunchtime, thanks to a solitary goal that sees them almost through to the knockout rounds. It came courtesy of Enrique Vera, who curled home with the outside of his foot after linking up with Lucas Barrios. Twenty-two minutes in, the same players combined as Barrios fired just over from a narrow angle, but it wasn't long before the goal did come. Barrios played a clever pass to split the Slovak defence, and Vera ran on and bent it around the goalkeeper with the outside of his right foot, holding off two challenged as he did it. Slovakia came back into the game before half-time, but it was the South Americans who should have scored again before the break, Manchester City's Roque Santa Cruz denied by goalkeeper Jan Mucha after bursting through the Europeans' defence. Despite having more possession in the second half, Slovakia still looked limp in attack, and so it was some surprise that it took until the 83rd minute for Miroslav Stoch, who departed Chelsea for Fenerbahce on the eve of the World Cup, to be introduced. The winger did not even have time to touch the ball though before Paraguay doubled their lead, Christian Riveros smashing home left-footed from the edge of the area with just five minutes to go. Into stoppage time Slovakia had their best effort, Robert Vittek driving at goal from distance, but Justo Villar in the Paraguay goal was equal to it, tipping it over his crossbar. It leaves the Slovakians on the verge of elimination, paying the price for the injury-time goal they conceded to New Zealand in their opening game, while Paraguay look certain to be in the last 16 following Italy's surprise draw with the All Whites. New Zealand took the lead just seven minutes in when Shane Smeltz slotted home past second choice goalkeeper Federico Marchetti following a Simon Elliott cross. Smeltz used to play for AFC Wimbledon. Riccardo Montolivo hit the post as the Italians responded, but it took a penalty, awarded when Ipswich Town's Tommy Smith brought down Daniele De Rossi, for them to draw level, Vincenzo Iaquinta successfully converting from 12 yards. Both sides went for the winner, and either side almost won it, first when Ivan Vicelich volleyed just wide, then Montolivo forced Kiwi goalkeeper Craig Paston into a one-handed save, before Iaquinta had a header cleared off the line and then Chris Wood, the West Brom teenager, beat Fabio Cannavaro and shot inches wide of the post. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/page/WorldCupNews/0,,10268~2075473,00.html PORTUGUESE PLEASURE Posted on: Mon 21 Jun 2010 Ricardo Carvalho played the full 90 minutes for Portugal as they strolled to victory against North Korea on Wednesday afternoon in Group G. Their 7-0 win leaves Portugal needing a point from their final game against Brazil to seal qualification at the expense of Ivory Coast, while also having the best goal difference in the group. Solid throughout, Carvalho had a busy first half before being able to sit back and watch his attack-minded team-mates play in the second, as they scored a flurry of goals against a tiring opposition. These two sides actually met at the World Cup in 1966, when the unknown Koreans led 3-0 against a Eusebio-inspired Portugal, who eventually came back to win 5-3. A repeat today would have been just as big a shock, in spite of the Asians' determined showing against Brazil last week. Needing to win after their limp draw against Ivory Coast in the first game, coach Carlos Queiroz went with attacking options, meaning our own Paulo Ferreira made way for Miguel at right-back, while Deco's hip problem ruled him out, former Stamford Bridge star Tiago replacing him in midfield. Carvalho started at centre-back, but actually had a chance to make an impression at the opposite end twice in the opening 10 minutes. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/33/1b/0,,10268~8854323,00.jpg
Carvalho shoots for Portugal against North Korea After four minutes he sliced his shot high over the Korean goal after breaking forward, and then two minutes later he headed against the post from a corner. Back in his own area, he was not quite so quick to react when the ball bounced loose following a save from Eduardo, but Pak Nam Chol headed over the bar when he might have hit the net. Despite that chance Portugal were the better side, and were suitably rewarded when Raul Meireles, who played for Porto against the Blues last season, burst through and latched onto Tiago's pass, lashing home past the goalkeeper on 28 minutes. A botched clearance in the Korean defence gave Meireles another chance shortly afterwards but he dragged his effort wide. Carvalho formed a part of the wall six minutes before the break, but having been smashed full on in the face by Korean captain Hong Yong Jo, he might have wished he hadn't. It was a blow he was still feeling a couple of minutes later, but one that ensured his side went in at half-time a goal to the good. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/36/1b/0,,10268~8854326,00.jpg
Carvalho feels the force of a powerful free-kick Just after the break Tiago had an effort tipped over by Ri Myong Guk and seven minutes later Simao doubled his side's lead. An intricate passing display involving forward Hugo Almeida and Meireles teed up the winger, who slotted through the legs of the goalkeeper to put the game beyond reach. On 55 minutes Almeida had a goal for himself, nodding home Fabio Coentrao's cross after the left-back had accelerated beyond North Korea's defensive line. Before the hour it was four, Cristiano Ronaldo producing the cross this time, pulling the ball back to the edge of the area, and Tiago finished with a tidy side-foot into the corner. Game well and truly over. More chances followed as Meireles went close and Ronaldo clipped the crossbar, before sub Liedson bashed home from close range after a defensive error and Ronaldo claimed his first of the tournament as he tapped into an empty net with three minutes to go. Tiago rounded the scoring off with a seventh, expertly nodding home a left-wing cross into the bottom-right corner. North Korea made one further foray forward, which Carvalho saw to with some excellent defending, and that was game over, a footballing lesson effectively delivered and North Korea eliminated from the tournament. He might not have found the net, and he might not have been involved in our emphatic run-in to the season, but Carvalho had played his part in a win of Chelsea proportions. Hopefully Deco and Ferreira are able to join him for the Brazil clash on Friday.
