Already two down by the time Malouda was introduced at the midway point by coach Raymond Domenech, the French had made six changes from the side defeated by Mexico last Thursday. The Chelsea man was joined by captain Patrice Evra on the bench following the squad's refusal to train over the weekend, while Nicolas Anelka flew back into England yesterday after being sent home. Despite the problems inside the camp, Les Bleus actually started brightly. Andre-Pierre Gignac had an early chance but shot straight at the goalkeeper, and then Abou Diaby's cross was flicked goalwards by Djibril Cisse, but from too great a distance to trouble the South African custodian, Moneeb Josephs. Bafana Bafana's first goal came 20 minutes in, and courtesy of an error at the other end by French 'keeper Hugo Lloris, who came for, and missed, a corner, allowing Bongani Khumalo to head into an empty net. Katlego Mphela almost doubled his country's lead as the vuvuzelas sounded in Bloemfontein, beating two challenged before shooting just wide. If the situation was already bad for the French, and it really was, they somehow contrived to send themselves even lower when Yoann Gourcuff was red-carded on 25 minutes, having raised an elbow in an aerial challenge with MacBeth Sabaya in the South African area. Their uphill struggle to avoid an embarrassing exit was becoming steeper and steeper, until South Africa netted a second goal and it became vertical. It was not pretty, but Mphela wouldn't mind one bit, as he bundled a low cross over the line at the far post to give his side a chance of progression. Josephs had to instinctively push a Franck Ribery free-kick over the bar after ex-Chelsea defender William Gallas had failed to divert it. Stephen Pienaar had another goal disallowed for the hosts before the break, but they went in at half-time with plenty to be cheerful about. Domenech on the other hand, had a very long face indeed. In a bid to improve their afternoon, if not their overall standing in the tournament, Malouda was brought on for the second half, in place of Gignac on the left of France's attack. The Chelsea player was quickly into the action, winning a free-kick for his side on the left flank, but it was South Africa who almost scored again, Mphela hitting the outside of the post after Siphiew Tshabalala had threaded him through a porous French defence. Either side had chances, though it was the Africans who looked more dangerous, before Malouda gave his side a way back into the game with 21 minutes remaining. Ribery burst through the home defence, beat the goalkeeper to the ball and squared across goal, where the flying winger was waiting to tap home France's first goal of the tournament. They continued to push for an equaliser which would at least begin to restore a little national pride, and South Africa's evident fatigue suggested it would be possible. It was not to be though, and so Malouda's World Cup ends prematurely, the first Chelsea man eliminated, while Domenech leaves his France post with the side in disarray. South Africa too head out, and in doing so become the first host nation not to make the knockout rounds, despite Mexico's defeat to Uruguay. Luis Suarez, the highly-rated Ajax forward, headed the only goal of that game in the first half, meaning Uruguay top the group and Mexico join them in second place thanks to their 2-0 win over the French. The win sends them through as runners up of Group C, while Slovenia crash out following USA's late winner over Algeria in the other game. As in the first two games, three of Chelsea's four began the game in the line-up. Despite pressure from within the camp and outside it, Fabio Capello resisted the urge to start Joe Cole, but John Terry, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard all continued. The sub would see his first action of this World Cup in the second half. It was a nervy start from the English, encapsulated by Terry's short square pass to Matthew Upson in the sixth minute, intercepted by a Slovenian forward but resulting only in an England throw. Former Chelsea man Glen Johnson sent Wayne Rooney away down the left in the 10th minute, and the Manchester United's cross almost picked out captain Steven Gerrard, but it was cut out at the last minute by a Slovenian defender. A long-range free-kick after 14 minutes from Lampard gave England a first attempt on target, the Jabulani ball moving in the air but held by Samir Handanovic. Moments later Terry got across his marker at a corner and flicked on, but the ball escaped past the far post. At the other end he covered his defensive partner with an expertly-timed block , and then Lampard headed the resultant corner away, only as far as Milivoje Novakovic whose deflected volley was held by goalkeeper David James. Then came England's opener, and it arrived through Jermain Defoe. James Milner crossed from the right, Defoe got in front of his man and volleyed through Handanovic. A nation breathed a large sigh of relief. Another Milner cross towards the Spurs forward on 26 minutes ended up with Lampard on the edge of the area, but the midfielder could not gain his composure in time and lashed over the bar with his left foot. England's front players were certainly lively, forcing Handanovic into a pair of fine saves within seconds. First Defoe smashed straight, then Gerrard slotted to his left, but the score stayed at 1-0. Seconds into the second half Lampard's header set up Defoe but the forward dragged it wide of the post with Handanovic beaten. Defoe did hit the net four minutes later but that was rightly given offside after Rooney had moved to soon, the incisive pass coming from Lampard, who was already showing signs of personal improvement. Terry met another corner at the far post on 57 minutes and connected well, only some smart keeping from Handanovic keeping him out, and then Rooney scuffed his effort against the post when he should have doubled the lead. At least the chances were coming this time. As long as it was 1-0 though Slovenia were in the contest, Novakovic and Zlatko Dedic reminding England of that with two efforts Terry had to throw himself in front of, before Johnson did the same from Dedic again. Seventy-one minutes had passed. Time for Joe Cole. The mercurial playmaker would tuck in behind Defoe, but it wasn't until 86 minutes that he could really make an impact, running into the Slovenia area but shooting high over the crossbar. Lampard kept the ball down the England right for a few vital seconds and drew a foul deep in injury time, allowing Joe Cole and Milner to play keep-ball against the Slovenian defence. It was an important contribution from Chelsea's departing midfield man and his Aston Villa colleague, and ensured a memorable, if edgy, victory. Serbia were well-fancied against the Australians but wasted a host of first-half chances and then fell two behind, while Germany were 1-0 winners over Ghana, the Africans progressing thanks to their superior goal difference to Australia. Ivanovic played the full 90 minutes for the Serbs, and almost scored, only to see his shot brilliantly saved (pictured above) before Australia took control and ended the Chelsea man's World Cup dream. Ghana went into the final round of games top of Group D, and required only a point against the Germans to secure their passage into the last 16. Germany needed to win to guarantee their qualification, but could go through with a draw if the Serbs did not beat Australia. For Ivanovic and Serbia it was simple, win and you're through, and they started the better side against the Australians, who themselves were not yet eliminated but would need Ghana to beat the Germans to progress. Inside the opening minutes Milos Krasic could and then should have given his side the lead, first shooting straight at Aussie's keeper Mark Schwarzer, and then rounding him but shooting over from a tight angle. Germany were almost gifted the lead at Soccer City when John Mensah diverted the ball towards his own goal, Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingson forced into a tremendous save to keep it out. After 20 minutes in Nelspruit, Chelsea man Ivanovic made a key interception at the far post, out-jumping Josh Kennedy after mark Bresciano had delivered a deep cross from the Australian right. Two minutes later he could have given his side the lead, ghosting into the area and firing a bouncing ball hard across Schwarzer, who outstretched his arm and made the type of excellent save fans of his Premier League club Fulham have grown used to seeing. Sami Khedira should have scored for Germany but was denied by Ghanaian stopper Kingson, and then Nikola Zigic headed wide for the Serbs after Ivanovic had supplied a killer cross. Krasic had an effort disallowed for offside and Kingson pushed a Bastian Schweinsteiger free-kick away, so both games went in goalless at half-time. If it stayed that way, Ivanovic would head home. Jason Culina fired just wide and then Mark Bresciano had a free-kick tipped wide as Australia started the second period brightly in Nelspruit, and then came news of a German goal from Soccer City. It came from Mesut Ozil, one of the bright young things of this tournament, who sent a dipping left-footed shot into the Ghanaian net. Now Serbia definitely needed a goal, but they were on the back foot and twice Ivanovic saved them, first hooking clear as the ball bounced in a busy penalty area, and then when he beat Tim Cahill to a loose ball after goalkeeper Dragan Stojkovic had let the ball out of his grasp. First class from the Double-winning defender. Ivanovic couldn't save them a third time though, and when Cahill out-jumped Nemanja Vidic and headed goalwards, there was only one outcome, and Serbia had a mountain to climb. That mountain grew just minutes later as sub Brett Holman fired in from distance to double the Australian lead, and suddenly the Socceroos had a chance to go through. They still needed two more goals though, either for themselves or the Germans, to level the goal difference with Ghana, but when Marko Pantelic pulled one back for Serbia their dream must have died. The forward had the ball in the net again, but the flag went up, and when the same player sent an easy chance a yard over from just six yards out, the game was up. It is a desperately disappointing end to the season for one of Chelsea's most improved men. Germany will now face England, and Ghana will play USA in the second round matches this weekend. With Brazil having already sealed their progression from Group G, only one of Portugal or Ivory Coast would be joining them, with the odds stacked heavily against Chelsea's African pair of Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou. They would need to beat North Korea heavily and hope the Portuguese were also badly beaten by Brazil, to overturn a nine-goal deficit in goal difference. For our Portuguese trio, a point against the Brazilians in Durban would be enough for a place in the last 16. Only Ricardo Carvalho was selected from the start in this game, with Paulo Ferreira on the bench and Deco ruled out with a hip injury. In Nelspruit, Kalou was on the bench, but Drogba would captain his country, and led from the front. Inside the opening 20 minutes, Les Elephants must have thought they had a chance as they went two goals up, Yaya Toure netting the first and Romaric the second, the latter after Drogba had rattled the crossbar with a thunderous volley and had a powerful header disallowed for offside. No matter how many they scored, it would not matter if Carvalho kept a clean sheet at the heart of the Portuguese defence, and that's just what he was doing. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/ee/3a/0,,10268~8862446,00.jpg
Carvalho challenges Nilmar Brazil forward Nilmar did have a far-post chance but goalkeeper Eduardo saved it, Carvalho clearing, and then Luis Fabiano headed wide at the far post, the Chelsea man doing just enough to put the striker off. Into the second half, Drogba sent a diving header wide from six yards out after 55 minutes, as hopes of a major upset began to slip away. For Portugal, Carvalho was effectively marshalling Nilmar, stealing the ball away from the forward twice in quick succession, while Cristiano Ronaldo's run should have resulted in an opening goal from Raul Meireles but the midfielder shot wide. Drogba failed to connect properly with another header as Kalou prepared to come on, making his entrance on 64 minutes. After a couple of false starts the 24-year-old managed to pick the ball up centrally, beat his man and test the goalkeeper, but his shot was too straight, then moments later his next effort was too high. Jong Tae-Se, who had impressed in earlier games for the Koreans, should have pulled a goal back, before Kaloushowed how it was done, side-footing home Arthur Boka's brilliant left-wing cross from close range. A Drogba free-kick was turned in from close range by Aruna Dindane but the offside flag was raised again, and with just four minutes remaining, the game was well and truly up for the Ivorians. In Durban, Portugal and Brazil were cancelling each other out, both content to go through and see what the draw from Group H throws up for the next round. For Carvalho, it is three clean sheets and a place in the last 16, for Drogba and Kalou, it is time for a break and a chance to reflect on what might have been.
