CHRISTMAS MAG FULL OF FIRST-TEAM EXCLUSIVES
Posted on: Wed 01 Dec 2010
The Christmas edition of Chelsea magazine is jam-packed with all things
Blue to entice any fan, including an exclusive interview with Didier
Drogba.
In the shops tomorrow, the club's official publication documents Michael
Essien's recent trip to Ghana, hears from Dan Petrescu about his time at
the club, has everything you need to know about Alex and more.
The cover story is an in-depth interview with Drogba. The Ivorian, who is
often cited as one of the best headers of the ball, describes his talent
in the air and the ability to score with both feet.
He may seem like one of the world's most natural strikers but Drogba
insists he had to work hard to reach the standard he is today. In a frank
and honest discussion, our number 11 reveals how long it took to reach his
peak.

Drogba talks through his game in the new magazine
'At the beginning, between the ages of 19 and 24, my ratio was not good
and I maybe needed five or six chances to score a goal. Now, through the
years, with all the practice and the work, it's less.'
Drogba's ability to convert chances into goals more efficiently now is
down to not only winning balls in the air but his capability to break past
defenders with sheer power. Often admired for his immense upper-body
strength, Drogba himself feels this power comes from elsewhere.
'My real strength is more in my legs and abdominals. The most important
thing in football are the abdominals - with these you can run fast or slow,
change direction, you can shoot, you can jump and score with the header.
'For me, the most important thing to play well is that I know my body and
I know my limits. That's why I think I can play so many games in a season.'

Essien's trip to Ghana is fully documented in new magazine
Another article in the magazine covers Essien's recent trip home where he
hosted 'A Day With Michael Essien' back in Ghana. The magazine covers what
took place during the two-day trip.
There are some fantastic images of our midfielder in his homeland,
surrounded by adoring fans, as well as interviews with some of the main
people involved in his foundation work. There are even some words of
wisdom from Stanley Quaye, the man who coached Essien as a youngster and
first recognised his talents.
Brimming with exclusive first-team interviews, Chelsea magazine also hears
from Portuguese right-back Paulo Ferreira as he reveals some of the most
iconic images of his time at the club.

Ferreira talks through his most memorable Chelsea pictures
Ferreira's Photo Album feature includes pictures of the defender lifting
the FA Cup and the Barclays Premier League trophy but there are also
several, behind-the-scenes images not seen before. He talks through his
favourites.
Did You Know Alex is another feature packed-full of first-team knowledge,
as the defender reveals small snippets of information from his life. You
can learn about the first record he ever bought, his first pair of
football boots, the last holiday he took and when he realised he could
become a professional footballer.
'When I was 19 I played for the reserve team in Santos in a cup in Belo
Horizonte,' said Alex. 'I played very well and when I came back to the
club the coach, Emerson Leao, called me to say they needed me for the
first team now. I was on the bench for three games and within one month I
had started to play regularly for Santos first team.'

The Did You Know Alex feature reveals some interesting facts
Anyone hoping to become a professional footballer themselves should read
the Training Ground section. This month Nicolas Anelka offers expert
advice on increasing your pace. The Frenchman insists sprinting up hill
helped him improve his top speed.
Then Match Analysis has a breakdown of Branislav Ivanovic's vital role at
both ends of the pitch, specifically looking at our 4-1 win over Spartak
Moscow, in which he netted a brace, before Chelsea magazine reveals its
Game of the Month.
On top of all this there's still the Ask The Manager feature, an interview
with Academy striker Bobby Devyne and a fan chat with Chelsea old boy
Steve Finnieston.
Chelsea magazine is available in the Stadium Megastore and all good
newsagents priced at £3.25.
