Recent moves have seen another pair of Chelsea youngsters depart to
temporary homes, meaning there are now 11 Blues plying their trade away
from Stamford Bridge.
Notts County's postponed FA Cup match at home to Bournemouth last weekend
means Michael Woods is yet to make his debut, which could come on familiar
territory, away to Brentford at the weekend. Griffin Park was formerly
used as our reserve team's home ground.
If he does feature it would be a first senior appearance for Woods since
he played twice for the Blues in January 2007.
Adam Phillip, who headed west for Yeovil Town last month, has made two
second-half substitute appearances for the Huish Park side. That included
a debut away at Charlton in a 3-2 defeat. The Glovers are currently 23rd
in League One, with Notts County just two places above them.
Also in League One is Conor Clifford, who last month extended his spell on
the south coast with Plymouth Argyle where he has started seven games, but
is still searching for his first goal - perhaps surprising given his
goalscoring exploits in last season's FA Youth Cup run with the Blues.
'I think I have done quite well, but there is still a lot more I can give
to the team,' Clifford recently said. 'I'm happy enough with how I'm
playing. Hopefully, I can just keep it up and get a few goals
'It's more up in the air, and more of a battle, than I'm used to, but it
has been good to learn a different style of football. I think I have dealt
with it quite well.
'It was a shock at first, though, because back at Chelsea the reserves is
more tippy-tappy, nice football.'
Since our last update towards the end of October, Michael Mancienne has
featured five times in the Barclays Premier League for Wolves,
registering his first win of the season with a late sub appearance at home
to Manchester City, before starts against Arsenal, Blackpool and most
recently Sunderland.
The 22-year-old defender has admitted to some frustration at a lack of
game time.
'When I've played I think I have done well. Obviously the manager picks
the team and if he wants to change it, then he is entitled to change it if
he thinks it is for the better of the team,' he said.
'Everyone wants to play but there is a lot of games and sometimes you do
have to be patient and bide your time because sometimes fresh legs may be
needed.'
Up in Scotland's top tier, Ben Gordon scored his first professional goal
last month as he continues to enjoy his loan spell with Kilmarnock.
The attack-minded left-back opened his account against Hamilton on
November 10 with a top-corner finish after coming inside from the flank.
That came in Killie's third consecutive 3-0 win, and they now sit in
mid-table of the Scottish Premier League. Gordon has started 17 times in
all competitions.
Over in Holland, Vitesse Arnhem's form has improved since the appointment
of Albert Ferrer as manager at the end of October. Since the 2-0 defeat to
PSV on Octover 27, Vitesse are five games unbeaten with three draws and
two wins, including a 5-1 smashing of VVV Venlo.
Of the three Chelsea loanees at the club, Goalkeeper Matej Delac is yet to
make a debut, but defender Slobodan Rajkovic has been a regular, starting
11 times in 16 league games, while Nemanja Matic has 12 starts and one sub
appearance. Both are yet to score.
Back in England, Jack Cork (pictured) netted a 90th minute winner for
Burnley against Derby on Saturday, his second strike in four games after
scoring the equaliser for the Clarets against Doncaster earlier in
November. Cork has now racked up 19 appearances during his current spell.
Ryan Bertand's Nottingham Forest were featured live on Sky Sports on
Monday evening, losing 1-0 to Sven Goran Eriksson's Leicester City in the
east Midlands derby. The 21-year-old left-back has started 17 times for
the Championship club as they chase promotion.
Finally in League Two, Rhys Taylor continues to occupy the goalkeeper's
jersey at Crewe Alexandra, making a vital penalty save in Saturday's 2-1
win at Morecambe. Alex remain in the hunt for a play-off position, and are
currently ninth in the table.
Taylor has amassed 23 appearances during the campaign, and will stay until
the end of the season.
