Former Chelsea right-back Albert Ferrer is the new coach of Vitesse
Arnhem, the Dutch club that currently has three of our players on loan.
Vitesse sacked previous coach Theo Bos last week after a poor run of
results. They sit third bottom of the Dutch top flight following the
weekend's 4-1 defeat to Utrecht.
Since retiring from playing after leaving Chelsea in 2003, Ferrer has
worked primarily as a media pundit.
The former Spain international played 113 times for the Blues after
joining from Barcelona in 1998. He was part of the side that reached the
quarter-finals of the Champions League in our first season in the
competition, scoring his only goal for the club along the way.
He joins a considerable contingent from that generation of Chelsea players
who have gone into management.
In his new job, Ferrer has available to him Nemanja Matic plus defender
Slobodan Rajkovic and goalkeeper Matej Delac. All three are on loan for
the season from Chelsea although Rajkovic and Delac have yet to make their
debuts for us.
