YOUTH REPORT: PORTSMOUTH 1 CHELSEA 4
Posted on: Sat 20 Nov 2010
Chelsea's Under 18s came back from a goal down to complete a comfortable
victory on a boggy pitch in Portsmouth this weekend.
After conceding early on, the Blues levelled before the break and went on
to find the net a further three times in a Chelsea-dominated second half,
with Todd Kane (pictured) netting twice to make him the side's top scorer.
Milan Lalkovic returned from a hamstring injury to take up a position in
the centre of an attacking trio, he was flanked by Bobby Devyne on the
left and Kane on the right.
Sam Walker returned between the posts with Nathaniel Chalobah and Archange
Nkumu as the central defenders. Ben Sampayo once again captained from
right-back.
Billy Clifford took up his position at right midfield, with George Saville
on his opposite side and Anton Rodgers in the middle.
It was a poor start for the Blues and the hosts took the lead after only
15 minutes when they were gifted time and space to shot. An outstretched
Walker tried to deny the effort but it still hit the back of the net.
The goal spurred Chelsea into action and 10 minutes later the scores were
levelled when a Saville corner was converted with an inch-perfect Clifford
header.
With a goal each, both sides began to sit back and Chelsea did not put in
their best performance before the break. Youth team manager Dermot Drummy
made one change before the second half got under way, replacing Aziz
Deen-Conteh with Adam Nditi at left-back.
Walker then made a couple of good saves to keep the score level at the
beginning of the second half before Lalkovic struck from 20 yards, crisply
hitting the back of the net just past the hour mark.
With the lead established, Chelsea began to dominate and soon it was 3-1
thanks to some clever football on the left.
With 72 minutes played, Devyne danced down his flank before releasing Kane
in the box who calmly slotted home for his first goal of the game.
Kane's second came courtesy of a penalty, won only 10 minutes from
full-time. After breaking down the right, Kane cut inside to make his way
into the Portsmouth area before being brought down by one of the host
defenders.
The Portsmouth player was shown a straight red for the incident before
Kane stepped up to neatly place the spot kick into the bottom corner,
ending the scoring in a well-earned victory for the Blues.
'I wasn't happy with the first-half performance but the effort from the
boys in the second-half was really fantastic because it was a tough game,'
said Drummy.
'Todd Kane had a brilliant game, he has a lot of heart and he works hard
throughout every game. But overall the boys showed a lot of spirit to come
back from a goal down to win 4-1 in difficult conditions.'
