Chelsea will face FC Copenhagen in the first knockout round of the
Champions League. The away game will be on Tuesday 22 February. The match
at Stamford Bridge will be on Wednesday 16 March.
It is the first time we will have faced the Danish side, who currently
lead their championship by 19 points, since 1998, when we progressed in
the Cup Winners' Cup after a 2-1 aggregate victory.
FC Copenhagen are the first side from Denmark to reach the knockout stage
of the Champions League. They finished second to Barcelona in the group
stage, losing in Camp Nou but drawing with the Spanish club at home. They
also beat Rubin Kazan and Panathinaikos at home, former Chelsea winger
Jesper Gronkjaer scoring in a 3-1 win over the Greek side. FC Copenhagen
won in Athens but lost the away game in Russia.
Chelsea's first European match was against a side of players from the
Danish capital. We played Frem away in the Fairs Cup in 1958, winning 3-1
away and 7-2 on aggregate.
The Danish connection goes back further than that however. Nils Middelboe
was our first overseas player, making 46 appearances between 1913 and
1922. The club he played for and later coached in Denmark, called KB,
merged with B 1903 in 1992 to form FC Copenhagen.
