TERRY TALKS DEVELOPMENT IN NEW MAGAZINE
Posted on: Thu 03 Feb 2011
John Terry discusses his time at the club in a frank and honest interview
with Chelsea magazine, out today.
Our home-grown talent reveals what it was like arriving at the Chelsea
training ground aged 14, how he first caught the eye of the club's coaches
and who really encouraged his style of play.
These days Terry is a massive role model on the pitch, and not just for
Chelsea fans, but he still gets involved with the Academy to help ensure
the Blues keep producing talents like our captain.
'I speak to Neil Bath [Academy manager] and [youth-team manager] Dermot
Drummy regularly to keep in touch with what they're doing at the Academy,'
admits Terry.
'It's important that we're there for the boys when they play in the Youth
Cup as well because I've been in their situation and, when you look up to
see first-team players in the dressing room, it's really important to you.'

Terry is the main interview
Terry goes on to describe his influences at the club. Glenn Hoddle was in
charge when he arrived with Dennis Wise as captain before the likes of
Marcel Desailly and Gianfranco Zola joined the ranks, so there were plenty
to study from.
But our captain discloses other lessons learned once he'd broken into the
first team, the difference between English and European football.
'When I first came into the side, winning tackles and being aggressive was
the main part of my game.
'But, naturally from being at Chelsea as they progressed, I was getting on
the pitch and playing in European competitions and it was a learning curve
because I was giving away cheap fouls in dangerous areas.
'So it was important to adapt my game to that environment and then back
again for the league because the following weekend we'd be away to someone
where I'd need to be physical and have a right old battle.'
Keen footballers can learn for themselves in the latest edition of Chelsea
magazine, as the club's official publication dissects a player's ability
to make quick decisions and play that perfect pass.
Four main factors contribute to mind-speed, which allows the body to react
without requiring conscious thinking time, they are: peripheral awareness,
visual memory, visualisation and reaction speed. You can learn about them
all.

Michael Essien's Photo Album
There are plenty more interviews as well, with an introductory note from
Michael Essien before the Ghanaian talks you through his Photo Album
feature, a collection of memorable images from his time at the club.

Did You Know... Ivanovic
And Branislav Ivanovic offers an insight into his football-related life
off the pitch, divulging the first game he watched, the last person to
leave the training ground and the last game he watched in Did You Know…
Ivanovic.
With so much emphasis on the defensive side of the game in this edition of
Chelsea magazine, it was only right the publication caught up with Paddy
Mulligan in The Boys Are Back In Town section.
After arriving in 1969, Mulligan was part of the squad for the famous 1970
FA Cup-winning season, although he didn't make the line-up for that final.
Undeterred, the versatile defender cemented his place in the side the
following campaign, which saw the Blues win the European Cup Winners' Cup.
You can learn what it was like arriving into a team boasting names
including John Hollins, Peter Bonetti, Peter Osgood, John Demspey and
Charlie Cooke, which of those names he most befriended and how he scored a
famous goal against Arsenal.

Building For The Future takes a closer look at the Academy
After looking back over days gone by, the magazine then jumps to the
present and further with Building For The Future, an in-depth article
looking into the workings of Chelsea's Academy.
In it you can read all about the club's philosophy, culture, how young
players are recruited and their performances are analysed before an
interview with Under 18s shot-stopper Jamal Blackman.
Chelsea magazine is available in the Stadium Megastore and all good
newsagents priced at £3.25.
