YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 1 CHARLTON ATHLETIC 0
Posted on: Sat 29 Jan 2011
Walter Figueira scored in the dying seconds for Chelsea Under 18s against
a tough Charlton side.
Chelsea made up for a poor first-half performance with some clever
football in the second period of the game but it was hard on the visitors
who put in a strong display.
Chelsea failed to take advantage of two corners in the first 10 minutes.
Instead Charlton had the better of the opening exchanges, with Chelsea
goalkeeper Jamal Blackman called into action to prevent Jordan Cousins
scoring.
The visitors hit the bar from just over six yards out when Tosan Popo
snatched at the ball after 15 minutes. Then Joe Piggott headed over before
Cousins shot high from the right flank.
In return Chelsea's Amin Affane had an effort from 20 yards out but failed
to threaten the visitors' goal as the ball flew high. The shot followed an
earlier half-volley by Anton Rodgers which went wide.
As the half-hour mark passed, Charlton were still on top as Popo forced an
outstretched Blackman to tip the ball out for a corner at the near post.
The threat was dealt with but it wasn't long before the opposition were
pushing forward once more.
However, despite all Charlton's chances, they were hindered by Blackman
and Chelsea's defence, with George Saville (pictured) putting in a strong
performance at centre-back. However Charlton came close to scoring when
Piggott headed a freekick inches over the bar.
Youth team manager Dermot Drummy made no changes at half-time but Chelsea
looked a much better side from the off. It wasn't long before Bobby Devyne
tested the Charlton shot-stopper with a long-range effort from the left
side.
Charlton still threatened but the Blues were retaliating with a much more
convincing performance. However, it was the travelling side which still
looked the more likely to score as Piggott and Adebayo Azeez chances went
wide.
Then quick feet from Devyne forced an effort inside the Charlton box as
the Chelsea striker danced around the opposition defence before drilling
narrowly wide. As Charlton countered that attack, Blackman was called into
action once more to smother a dangerous ball across the face of goal.
A fairly uneventful period of football followed before Drummy replaced
Ishmael Seremba with Jordan Houghton for his first Under 18s game, Chelsea
changed to a diamond formation. The debutant soon drilled a shot over the
bar from 25 yards out after Kane broke down the right flank and he picked
up the ball in the centre of the pitch.
A fantastic tackle by captain Ben Sampayo then snatched possession from
Charlton inside the Chelsea box, breaking down a chance for the visitors
to steal the lead, before Figueira shot inches over at the other end.
At the death, Chelsea scored. The Blues broke down the right and released
a cross into the box with some good football from Devyne, Figueira
controlled on the half-volley before turning and tapping in.
'We're really pleased with that victory. Physically we were out-gunned but
we upped our game and the focus of the back four was excellent,' said
Drummy after the game.
'The side was made up with a lot of young boys. If we win it's fantastic
but if we lose it's about development and teaching these young boys, but
the victory is very pleasing.'
