RESERVE REPORT: CHELSEA 2 ARSENAL 2
Posted on: Wed 02 Feb 2011
Chelsea were moments away from victory at Cobham on Wednesday afternoon as
the Blues and Arsenal met for a second time in eight days at reserve-team
level.
Last week away at London Colney, our second string went down to a single-
goal defeat and weresecond best for much of the game, but in the re-match
it was a very different story as Steve Holland's side dominated despite
conceding the first goal again.
Conor Clifford, back from gaining senior experience on loan at Plymouth,
levelled and Milan Lalkovic (pictured above), who sunk Arsenal's youth
team in the FA Youth Cup last month, put Chelsea ahead, both goals coming
in the second half. However a quality strike in stoppage time by the
Gunners meant the points were shared.
Some regular performers at reserve-team level have recently gone out on
loan but Jeffrey Bruma and Josh McEachran remained to bring some
first-team experience to today's proceedings which saw Chelsea on top from
the off.
Lalkovic shot wide on five minutes, and then totally outstripped Arsenal
centre-back Ignasi Miquel for pace down the right. His low cross wasn't
met by a stretching Adam Phillip at the far post.
From the same flank a dipping Gokhan Tore cross found Conor Clifford, also
at the back stick, but his header down was saved. It was Chelsea creating
all the early chances.
Tore should have done better than shoot straight at the keeper on 13
minutes after Phillip had wrestled the ball away from Daniel Boateng as
Chelsea continued to press.
On 20 minutes Arsenal did threaten when Luke Freeman broke away on to a
loose touch by Danny Pappoe, but fellow centre-back Jeffrey Bruma pursued
hard and made the vital block.
Moments later Chelsea hit the post when Phillip flicked on a free-kick
from Tore.
Arsenal were making mistakes at the back and only a deflection prevented
Lalkovic finding the net on 25 minutes, and the Slovakian then under hit a
good chance from a Tore cross and the keeper saved comfortably.
The game had a good pace about it but although Steve Holland's side
continued to dominate possession, the lack of penetration against the
quick Arsenal defence became more apparent as the half drew on.
However there was no sign Arsenal would go into the half-time break a goal
up. The visitors went ahead two minutes before the whistle after McEachran
lost the ball in a tight spot just outside the area. It was played on to
Rhys Murphy who shot hard past Walker.
Conor Clifford was inches away from levelling before the interval but his
curling shot didn't swing back quite enough.
Another Chelsea chance went begging four minutes after the restart when
Tore didn't anticipate that the Arsenal keeper wouldn't cut out a Phillip
cross and the ball squirmed past him, but on 52 minutes a deserved
leveller did come. Conor Clifford demonstrated his ability from distance
by smashing a shot in from the edge of the box.
Phillip, who had swapped wings to the right of the Chelsea attack for this
half, shot wide and then had a good shout for a penalty turned down after
staying on his feet as he was challenged. Arsenal keeper James Shea then
pulled off a double save from Phillip and Lalkovic. The Blues were
knocking hard on the door.
They went ahead on 63 minutes after good work on the right of the area by
attacking full-back Billy Clifford. He gave Lalkovic a tap-in at the far
post.
Arsenal should have levelled from their first real attack of the half but
Freeman scooped over.
Inside the final quarter of an hour, Conor Clifford gave Lalkovic a race
with the keeper to reach his pass which the Arsenal man won narrowly. He
hacked clear to McEachran who cleared the crossbar as he tried to find the
unguarded net from a long way out.
It looked as if Chelsea were comfortably closing out the victory but there
was a big scare with two minutes left on the clock when keeper Sam Walker
scuffed a clearance. Murphy spurned the gift when he delayed an allowed
Pappoe to challenge him.
If the Blues were breathing a sigh of relief they did so too soon.
Possession was given away unnecessarily and from wide out on the left,
Freeman hit an unstoppable shot over Walker and into the far top corner of
the net.
