Defensive lapses cost the youth team dear away at Fulham on Saturday
afternoon, less than 48 hours after progressing in the FA Youth Cup.
It was the first league game the Academy side has played in well over a
month, and with a side made up of either those who played against Arsenal
at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night or those sorely lacking competitive
action, so coach Dermot Drummy expected difficulties at Motspur Park.
'It wasn't good but I expected it,' he admitted afterwards. 'I'm not
making excuses, we gave three goals away but the boys were playing very
soon after beating Arsenal, so it was a fixture we didn't need really, but
some of the boys did need the football.
'We played some really good stuff and Toddy Kane scored a great goal so
there were some good positives to take.'
Chelsea started well and Bobby Devyne could have opened the scoring in the
first couple of minutes when he was sent through one-on-one with the home
goalkeeper, but it was the hosts who took the lead 20 minutes in when
concentration was lost in the backline, and that was followed with two in
five minutes prior to half-time.
Trailing 3-0 at the break, Chelsea continued to play some attractive
attacking football but conceded a fourth before Kane (pictured) netted a
consolation when he finished off a superb passing move.
The Blues tired though and conceded a fifth late on, confirming a first
defeat since November, and the heaviest of the season.
'I think it's prevalent to point out that most of the boys either haven't
played or played at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, and you wouldn't ask the
first team to do that, but we had to play the game,' Drummy continued.
'Danny Stenning ran 60 metres in the last two minutes to make a block
tackle and that gives me an indication of his mentality. Aziz Deen-Conteh
had a poor game but listened and took the information on board, and those
are the things you look for in those defeats.
'This is a developmental squad, we want to win every game but play with
our philosophy, we don't change that regardless of the personnel, and I'd
urge everyone to remember the way we play at youth team level more than
the results.'
