ANELKA: THINKING DEEPER

Nicolas Anelka's place at the front of a midfield diamond, as he was
deployed in the matches against Sunderland and Liverpool, has been
described as a new position for the 31-year-old.

He moved there with Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou playing ahead of him
at the Sunderland Stadium of Light when Chelsea ran out 4-2 winners,
earning praise for a performance that included creativity and a goal, and
then less successfully with Drogba and debutant Fernando Torres were the
strike partnership when Liverpool visited.

Anelka has long been a player with mobility to his game and has been used
in a variety of attacking roles at Chelsea, and although the midfield one
may be new to him while wearing blue, it is not the first time in his
career he has been positioned there as he tells the Chelsea Official
Website ahead of tonight's match at Fulham.

'I played like this when I was playing at Liverpool, behind Emile Heskey
and Michael Owen,' Anelka recalls. 'I had a good time doing it, and I
played like it in Turkey at Fenerbahce, but we used to play two behind and
one striker.'

At the end of his half-season loan spell at Anfield in 2002, Liverpool
finished second in the league and Anelka contributed five goals in 15
starts and seven sub appearances. Owen scored 19 league goals.

Although Anelka has since played as one of two players deeper than Drogba
in the Chelsea attack, he equates his current role at the front of the
diamond as closer to how he was asked to play at Fenerbahc,e. There the
main striker was Brazilian Marcio Nobre with Tuncay, later of
Middlesbrough and Stoke, also part of the attack. They won the Turkish
league in 2005.

'When you are playing in this position you are more midfielder than
striker but during the game it is similar because you still have the
chance to be up front and to score goals or to give some assists,' Anelka
explains, 'but you have more focus on the defending, you have to do more
defending than up front but you get used to it.'

The degree to which the team in general is expected to close down space
had already increased in 2011. It brought an improvement in results and
heading into a game tonight at Fulham following victories at Bolton and
Sunderland, confidence away from Stamford Bridge has improved.
'We know that sometimes the best defence is to attack and score goals, and
pressing the opposition is the best thing to do to score quickly,' Anelka
says. 'So in training we do that all the time and we try to do it in the
games now.
'Everybody in the team has to press and playing like that it is more easy
for everybody to defend. It is also easier to take possession quickly in
the opposition half and to score quickly.
'I think we played better away in the last two games and against Fulham we
will try to do the same, to keep pressing and to try to score the goals
that way.'
