YOUTH CUP REPORT: CHELSEA 2 BARNSLEY 1
Posted on: Sat 12 Feb 2011
The holders are through the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup thanks to
goals from Josh McEachran and Nathaniel Chalobah.
In a one-sided game with a remarkably similar scoring pattern to the
previous round's win over Arsenal, Dermot Drummy's side were caught cold
and went a goal behind after just 15 seconds.
However they kept their heads and cheered on by another good crowd at
Stamford Bridge, the Under 18s always looked likely to pull the game
around, even if it was left until three minutes from time to go ahead when
Chalobah converted a McEachran delivery.
Fresh from England Under 21 duty, McEachran had equalised from a good move
shortly after the interval.
There were small alterations to the side that had beaten Arsenal. Todd
Kane, who played on the right wing that night, dropped back to right-back
with Ben Sampayo making way. Playing on the flank ahead of Kane was Bobby
Devyne with on the opposite flank, Adam Nditi, a schoolboy who had a hand
in the winning goal against the Gunners having come on as sub for the last
half hour.
In the Arsenal game Chelsea were behind before some players on the pitch
had even touched the ball and this time they let one in even earlier. In
the first move of the match, Reuben Noble-Lazarus, who two and a half
years ago became the youngest to play league football in England, ran
behind Kane and crossed for Danny Rose to convert with Chalobah too far
away to intervene. A glance to check the offside flag wasn't up was
followed by enthusiastic celebrations from the Yorkshire side.
And there the Barnsley threat on goal more or less ended. It was constant
Chelsea pressure from then on.
Nditi couldn't test the keeper with a very difficult volleying chance, and
at the other end a free-kick from deep by Barnsley briefly threatened to
catch Chelsea keeper Jamal Blackman too far off his line but it cleared
the bar.
Chelsea were cursing themselves for not equalising 11 minutes in. Aziz
Deen-Conteh won a free-kick out of the opposing full-back which was
delivered perfectly by Billy Clifford. Daniel Pappoe (pictured below) used
his significant height advantage but with everyone expecting the net to
billow, the ball was nodded wide.

On 19 minutes Nditi tricked his way to the edge of the area but got under
his shot and Clifford aimed too high as well. Milan Lalkovic flicked a
Clifford corner on its way but that flew wide too. Chelsea needed to put
some attempts on target.
Clifford was scurrying around to good effect and McEachran was seeing
plenty of the ball and was frequently supplying Deen-Conteh and Nditi as
Chelsea attacked almost exclusively down the left. When Nditi popped up on
the other side of the area behind the defence, he ran out of space to
threaten the target.
On 39 minutes, Lalkovic, who made his Under 21 debut for Slovakia midweek,
finally worked the keeper from 25 yards but the shot was too straight.
Chelsea didn't score as quickly at the start of the second half as
Barnsley had at the start of the first but it wasn't far off. Kane smashed
a cross in from the right which McEachran controlled. Clifford took the
ball on towards the line and back-heeled to McEachran who finished inside
the near post. Great football from Chelsea in a tight area.

Deen-Conteh shot across the face of goal as the Blues went for a rapid
second goal, and then Clifford really caught hold of a shot from the edge
of the area which curved agonisingly off-target.
Sixty-four minutes in there was an altercation involving a few players
after McEachran and just-arrived sub Chris Moyo had entwined after a
tackle. It was nothing much but they were booked, as Kane had been for a
foul shortly after the Chelsea goal.
On 72 minutes McEachran pushed a pass down the inside-right channel,
Lalkovic pulled the trigger but the Barnsley keeper saved. There were 10
minutes left to avoid extra time when Kane hit a bouncing shot that
extended Lidakevicius but missed by a couple of feet.
With seven minutes left on the clock, Rose joined the yellow-carded for
pulling back Kane who was flying forward. The visitors were looking tired
after their rearguard action and had looked vulnerable to set pieces
throughout.
On 87 minutes came the winner. Devyne's positive running earned a
free-kick near the corner flag that was fired into the six-yard box by
McEachran's left-foot. Pappoe challenged and the keeper came to punch
superman-style but missed. Chalobah behind him guided it home with his
head. It was the 16-year-old centre-back's second goal of this cup run.

Barnsley had one chance to save themselves in stoppage time but a powerful
shot was blocked by the defence.
'In the end it is a pleasing result because of the team's mentality,' said
youth team manager Dermot Drummy. 'They don't see themselves as beaten. We
were sloppy in going 1-0 down, it wasn't good defending at all but the
players don't get fazed.
'We were a bit tentative and playing a bit too deep so we said at
half-time, relax, enjoy it, you are better than that. Milan [Lalkovic] and
Josh [McEachran] then pushed higher and we took the game to them.
'We created enough chances to win the game first half and second half we
created a good goal out of nothing. We had a good advantage height-wise
but despite the winning goal we were poor on finishing the set pieces, so
there are areas we can improve.
'We are trying to get it down and play, the centre-backs are breaking out
from the back and we just need our midfield slightly higher, but the
willingness to learn and play is a credit to the club.'
