RESERVE REPORT: CHELSEA 4 WEST HAM UNITED 3
Posted on: Wed 16 Feb 2011
Chelsea reserves were deserved winners against West Ham on Wednesday,
overturning a half-time deficit to claim three points.
Fabio Borini was the hat-trick hero, giving Chelsea an early lead before
the visitors fought back with two goals against the run of play.
The Italian forward struck twice more to put the Blues back in front
before the hour mark, only to be pegged back once more by an experienced
West Ham side.
Chelsea were not to be denied though, and into the last 10 minutes Milan
Lalkovic converted to earn the win.
Steve Holland had five members of this season's FA Youth Cup side in his
line-up, including Josh McEachran, while Ryan Bertrand was making a first
appearance since returning from his loan at Nottingham Forest and
recovering from a hamstring injury. Also back was Borini for a first
outing since his shoulder operation. Hilario was in goal.
In contrast to Chelsea's youth, West Ham could boast major Premier League
experience with Julien Faubert in the back four, Thomas Hitzlsperger,
still recovering from injury and awaiting a first-team debut in the
middle, and Benni McCarthy in attack.

Tore takes on Hitzlsperger
Lalkovic went close inside the opening couple of minutes when he cut in
from the left, his right-footed drive deflected just wide of Marek Stech's
post.
The opening goal was 12 minutes in coming, McEachran gaining possession in
midfield, beating his man and slipping in Borini who showed no ring rust
in front of goal, sweeping the ball home into the bottom corner.
Stech had to come off his line to block Gokhan Tore, and on the half-hour
a Borini free-kick had the goalkeeper diving to his right to tip the ball
behind as Chelsea dominated.
Hilario was enjoying a quiet afternoon, so it was a surprise when West Ham
drew level through McCarthy shortly afterwards, the former Blackburn
striker converting from close range after Freddie Sears had crossed low
into the Chelsea box.
The home side remained on top though, and a surge forward down the right
from Jacopo Sala should have brought a goal, but Billy Clifford dragged
his effort just the wrong side of the post.
We were made to pay for that missed chance on the stroke of half-time when
Sears squeezed a deflected shot between Hilario and his near post to give
the visitors an unlikely advantage at the break.
Two minutes into the second half Chelsea almost levelled, Lalkovic
crossing and Michael Woods forcing a parry from Stech, then following up
the awkward, bouncing rebound with another goalbound shot, which was
cleared off the line by a Hammers defender.

McEachran on the attack
The equaliser came on 55 minutes, and it came from Borini's persistence as
he chased a Woods through ball, winning possession from West Ham defender
Jordan Spence before being hauled down for a penalty.
Full of confidence, the striker stepped up for the kick himself, chipping
it calmly down the middle.
Just three minutes later Borini grabbed his hat-trick to put Chelsea in
front, sending a powerful drive beyond Stech into the bottom corner from
outside the area after Tore had fed him.
Back on the defensive, Chelsea captain Daniel Pappoe twice had to be alert
to prevent Sears from a potential breakthrough, but when the wide man did
get a cross into the area, United were level again, this time Zavon Hines
blasting past Hilario from close range after the cross had evaded
Nathaniel Chalobah.
No worry though as nine minutes remaining Chelsea would lead again, and
this time they would hold on to it.

Lalkovic nets the winner
McEachran's vision allowed him to spot Lalkovic's well-timed run, and the
Slovak took his opportunity early, lifting the ball over Stech and into
the empty net to claim a hard-fought but well-deserved victory.
