YOUTH REPORT: SOUTHAMPTON 3 CHELSEA 1

Chelsea's youngsters were well beaten 3-1 by the league leaders on
Saturday morning to round off a disappointing weekend for the club.
Coach Dermot Drummy was frustrated by his side's performance against a
strong Saints side, but who like Chelsea were fielding a mix of players
from Under 16 to Under 18 age groups.
The Blues went in front on 23 minutes when a Toddy Kane (pictured) cross
found its way into the net but Southampton came back strongly when Sam
Hoskins equalised just before half-time, sending a left-footed shot past
Jamal Blackman from inside the area.
Just before the hour mark Southampton went in front through Jordace
Holder-Spooner, who had burst into the area and let fly at the near post,
and the scoring was complete when Jake Sinclair, younger brother of former
Chelsea man Scott, completed the scoring for Southampton inside the final
10 minutes, leaving Drummy to reflect on a bad day at the office.
'In terms of the first half it was even Stevens, Jamal pulled off a couple
of good saves but they equalised, and in the second half we hardly got out
of our half against a good side, it could have been 6-1,' he admitted.
'We didn't win our tackles or work as hard as they did and I said that to
the boys afterwards, it was a bad day. It's alright talking about how we
play good football but if you don't run and tackle it's no good playing
good football, we surrendered.
'I've no problem in losing but you have to show good application for 90
minutes and we didn't do that, so it's not acceptable and we have to let
them know, it's part of their development. Now we'll come back in on
Monday, pick them up and we'll be looking for improvement.
'Credit to Jamal who stopped it being a 6-1, Toddy Kane never stopped
working and Lewis Baker, an Under 16, came out of it with credibility too.'
