Chelsea's Under 18s netted three times in the first-half despite wet
conditions to beat Ipswich Town at Cobham today.
Goals came from Billy Clifford (pictured), Nathaniel Chalobah and Anton
Rodgers while Jamal Blackman put in a fine performance to keep his clean
sheet.
Billy Clifford found the opener after only 10 minutes, curling home a
freekick from 20 yards out. The set piece took a deflection from an
Ipswich defender and their keeper got a hand to the shot but momentum
carried it over his head and into the net.
Minutes later Clifford had another chance blocked by the Ipswich
shot-stopper before Bobby Devyne smashed the rebound wide.
Chelsea were looking dangerous though and seconds after that chance the
visitors were forced to clear further shots off their line after Chalobah,
Rodgers and Devyne all created chances.
It was 2-0 to the hosts before 20 minutes of football had been played.
This time it was Chalobah who scored, shooting from the edge of the box
and finding the top corner as the Blues battered Ipswich's defence.
Despite the lead, Chelsea continued to pressure and soon Rodgers sent a
Todd Kane pass glancing across the face of goal with his head.
At the other end, Ipswich's first real chance came when Chalobah fouled 20
yards out from goal. The set piece resulted in good save by Blackman, who
dived low to deny a direct shot in difficult conditions.
Ipswich had another chance headed wide before the Blues made it three.
Breaking on the counter-attack, Rodgers found space on the right flank
before shooting from just inside the box. The keeper got a hand to the
shot once again but momentum carried it over his head and Rodgers rounded
the shot-stopper to tap it home after 38 minutes.
Ipswich were gifted a chance to score before the first half ended when
Blackman fumbled a shot and the ball bounced free six yards out, but the
Blues defence blocked all shots before Aziz Deen-Conteh dealt with the
danger.
Youth team manger Dermot Drummy made two changes at half-time, swapping
Ben Sampayo for Todd Kane and Rohan Ince for Chalobah.
Ipswich came out a stronger side and within minutes of the restart the
visitors sent a shot wide. Moments later they also hit the bar after their
number 9 found space on the edge of the box to shoot.
Drummy made one more change, swapping Archange Nkumu for Devyne. Ince then
moved forward to take up the striker's position. The changes slowed
Chelsea's tempo and although they still commanded much of the possession,
Ipswich's confidence rose.
Then Chelsea had a goal disallowed after Affane curled a freekick towards
the far post and Danny Pappoe was deemed to have fouled the keeper as the
ball flew over the line.
With 10 minutes left to play, Chelsea went down to 10 men when Deen-Conteh
left the pitch and Affane took up the left-back's role.
George Saville had a chance cleared off the line after Ince pulled the
ball back for the midfielder to strike; it was one of the few
opportunities Chelsea created in the second-half, with the initial ball
coming from Clifford.
It ignited a flurry of chances for the Blues, with Ince chesting down and
half-volleying a Saville pass goal-ward, only to be blocked, before
Clifford smashed the rebound over the bar.
Blackman was called into action on several occasions, mostly from
long-range efforts, but did well to keep his clean sheet in the latter
stages of the game as the visitors pressured Chelsea's defence. As a
result of his performance, the game ended 3-0 to Chelsea.
'We dictated the play in the first-half,' said Drummy after the game.
'They came back at us a bit in the second but we dealt with it well.
'We went down to 10 after Deen-Conteh took a knock and we played Rohan up
front because Devyne took a knock as well, and Rohan needs to get his
fitness levels up again.'
