YOUTH CUP REPORT: CHELSEA 2 WATFORD 1
Posted on: Wed 02 Mar 2011
An excellent all-round display saw Chelsea through to the semi-finals of
the FA Youth Cup for the third time in four seasons.
The Blues outplayed their opponents for much of the 90 minutes, but for
long periods of the first half it looked like it would be a case of after
the Lord Mayor's Show following Tuesday night's first team win against
Manchester United.
Watford took the lead against the run of play with a powerful low finish,
but resolute Chelsea would not be beaten and continued to pass the ball
neatly, led by the excellent Josh McEachran and Billy Clifford in midfield.
A Bobby Devyne header just before the break ensured it would be a
thrilling second half and so it proved, with the Blues passing up a number
of opportunities to win it before an own goal in the final 10 minutes gave
us the win we deserved.
As in the previous round, McEachran was available, the night after he had
been an unused sub on his 18th birthday against Manchester United, and he
started in the No 10 jersey behind Milan Lalkovic in an unfamiliar 4-4-1-1
formation.

Todd Kane kept his place from the previous round at right-back, while
Tomas Kalas, now with the club full-time having been signed last summer,
made his FA Youth Cup debut at centre-back alongside captain Daniel
Pappoe.
Inside the first half-minute the lively Lalkovic had forced a corner, and
shortly afterwards he and McEachran combined as Englishman sent Slovakian
through, the diminutive forward slotting just the wrong side of the post.
After five minutes Kane almost cauvht Watford goalkeeper Jonathan Bond out
of position, but the stopper recovered to palm his well-struck shot
behind. From the corner, the ball fell loose to George Saville who went
close with a fierce half-volley.
Our visitors had come through previous rounds comfortably, winning at
Fulham in the previous round, at home to Wigan in round four and at home
to Swindon Town in the third, but htere was no doubting the Cup holders
would give them a tougher examination.
Just under 10 minutes in though, the Hornets went in front after Chelsea
had failed to clear, despite Youth Cup debutant Tomas Kalas making two
impressive blocks. The ball fell loose to Watford midfielder Sean Murray
and he made no mistake in firing past Jamal Blackman from just outside the
area.
On 20 minutes only a brave piece of Saville defending inside his own area
kept the deficit to one, but it was still Chelsea who were dominating
possession and territory, Watford looking to counter at every opportunity
with most attacks going through the pacy Gavin Massey who could boast
first-team experience.
McEachran and Clifford each tested the goalkeeper's handling before the
half-hour mark, while one excellent passing move almost led to goal but
instead only to a corner, one of several the Blues had forced in the early
stages.
Five minutes before half-time there was serious cause for concern, when
Devyne went careering off the side of the pitch and into the East Stand
via an advertising board, but after a spell of treatment he was deemed
okay to continue and took up his spot on the left wing once more.
It was Devyne who sent Lalkovic away for what looked like Chelsea's final
chance of a frustrating first half, but the forward was unable to find the
target after being effectively marshalled by yellow shirts.
There would be just one more opportunity before the break, and it was
Devyne who would take it after Aziz Deen-Conteh had forced another corner.
Clifford delivered and Devyne flicked his header up and over the keeper
into the far corner to restore parity.

It was a goal Chelsea had deserved though not one you could say had
definitely been coming, Watford's main strength being their ability to
regroup and make life difficult for Chelsea's creative forces to attack.
Now the Blues had the breakthrough though, the visitors would need to come
out and play once more.
Into the second period Deen-Conteh was the first to sight goal, galloping
forward from left-back past two desperate challenges before sending a
cross-shot across the face of goal, the ball evading everyone on its way
behind.

Bursts from deep were Chelsea's main threat in the second half's early
stages, McEachran releasing the persistent Lalkovic down the left, only
for him to be left isolated up front.
McEachran magic on 57 minuets brought Chelsea a penalty. His excellent
reverse pass found Clifford who danced around his marker before shooting,
the ball blocked by a Watford arm leaving the referee to point to the
penalty spot.
Lalkovic took responsibility and went for placement, but opened his right
foot up too much and sent his side-footed shot wide. His character would
now be tested in the final 30 minutes.
Goalscorer Devyne was replaced on 62 by schoolboy Adam Nditi, a natural
left-back but who can attack as effectively from left-wing, and did so
effectively against Arsenal in round four.
Into the final 25 minutes McEachran was really beginning to pull the
strings in the Watford half, his vision combining well with Clifford'
work-rate, while Nathaniel Chalobah was tidying up the loose balls
effectively. It seemed Chelsea were the fitter side and Watford were
tiring, having spent most of the night trying to win possession back.
McEachran and Clifford set up Lalkovic whose low shot was well-saved, and
then Nditi shot over after McEachran had found him on the left with a
lofted through-ball.
Another Deen-Conteh run had spectators urging him to shoot, but instead he
laid off to Clifford, and the midfielder curled over.
Chelsea were turning the screw but couldn't edge in front. Bond saved
one-handed from Lalkovic before Thomas Hoban cleared Clifford's follow-up
off the line when a goal looked certain.
Yet another McEachran foray into opposition territory brought about the
winner. His first-touch pass right to Clifford, who himself had excelled
for most of the evening, gave the midfielder time to cross low and hard,
and though he could not beat the first man, the deflection off Watford's
Adam Fenwick took the ball powerfully into the net to give Chelsea the
advantage. Eight minutes remained.
In that time Watford should have levelled, when another Chelsea attack
naively broke down allowing a counter. An inch-perfect cross was headed
wide from four yards by dub Dereece Gardner. It was a major let-off for
Chelsea, who had been guilty of being a little too adventurous when they
should have been sitting back.
Lalkovic forced one further save from the impressive Bond in the Watford
goal, but neither net would be breached despite Blackman being called into
action with a low save in injury-time, meaning Chelsea march into the last
four and dreams of defending our silverware live on. The winners of the
quarter final between Man United and Liverpool await with the date of the
two legs yet to be set.
